Follow the link scroll down to to the bottom "Give Me More" vodeo and give it a listen. The video is lame so shrink it down and just listen to the music.

This CD by Apartment 26 is to blame for pushing me towards listening to more country. Not because it sucked or anything but because it was so original IMO. After words it seemed like too many bands sounded like Nickelback, Blink 182, Green Day, etc.

Anyways I think it has a pretty original sound.... any thoughts?

It's okay. But a closer hybrid is to be found on Primus, Iceburn, Virgin Black and some of Niacin works. Those are the examples I can think about at the moment.

Any of you guys heard early Candiria stuff? They tended to do a jazz-metal fusion.

Hey! I forgot that one. Also there's a band named Aghora with some jazzy moves.

Is not rock and therefore metal a child of jazz?

Cousin, perhaps. Jazz's basis is improvisation, whereas rock's basis is "the song", so I don't see how there could be a direct relation.

Besides, then we'd be getting into incest territory...and a weird one at that...

No, rock and metal are inspired from blues. Jazz is a whole other idea.

Jazz focuses on improvision and "on the spot" creativity - rock and blues therefore focus much more on the actual song - you follow the songs, not the artists themselves.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll have to give them a listen.

Aman - I'm familiar with much of Dreamtheater's stuff but I'm not hearing the jazz thing with them.

The interesting thing about this album is that the other songs are as different from the first as they are from each other. It really is a diverse album with a lot of different styles happening, pretty kewl if you dig their sound.

Kind of obvious, but how about Fusion? Miles Davis' Bitches Brew? Miles was way ahead of his time - in terms of rock, Fusion would be Classic Rock compared to modern Metal of course, but the idea is the same, and executed beautifully.

Mr. Bungle... the terrifying and glorious love spawn of jazz and metal. all bow down before it.
