If iPod LOD bypasses internal amp; then why do I see a volume control?

When connecting my iPod Touch to my HRT iStreamer and iBasso P4 Warbler amp, via the LOD cable, why am I able to control the volume from the slider-control on the device?  This has happened intermittently to me.

I recall in the past that the volume control would be disabled on the device.

Okay
1. Your LOD is on the way out (sorry, happened to me as well but hey, 10 bucks no biggie).
2. One or more of the 36 pins in your iPod are bent/broke, that's why your problem is intermittent (sorry, also happened to me).

I agree. Your LOD is faulty. Unless it's a bent pin & you can repair it I suggest a new LOD. I personally have spares,...FiiO in da house!!!

uh oh, I suspect it could be the pins inside my iPod Touch, as this behavior is replicated with various LOD cables.

I speculate the cause was having the device inside an Otterbox case whereby the access to the dock in the device was very tight, and  narrow, likely placing pressure on the internal pins... live and learn.
