Hi,

Are there any good IEMs that do not require any filters? Filters seem to be this huge pain where you're not sure whether they are going to be available to you in the future and are at additional cost.

Thanks!
George

Don't confuse IEMs with canals. Ulimate Ears; DJAYs...Not too sure about Shures.

They all have something in them to protect the driver from earwax.

The question is whether you can clean or replace it when it gets clogged.

If you're careful taking the filters out of your IEMs, you can just soak them in hydrogen peroxide to clean them.

My E3c and UM1 don't have replaceable filters. They have screens in the bottom of the nozzle. Your ears would have to produce a lot of wax without you cleaning the the nozzles for ear wax to get down to the screen. They're not like the im716 where the filter screen is at the end of the nozzle. I wore my E3c for 2 1/2 years and had to clean the nozzle 3 or 4 times. That probably would have been 3 or 4 filter changes for the im716. I've had the UM1 since January and haven't had to clean the nozzle yet, I think because to the recessed tip in the Shure black foam tips I'm using. The ear wax gets on the tip of the foam and I just have to wash it.

I'd stay away from canal phones. I owned a CX300 and it had a non-replaceable screen at the tip of the nozzle. There's a thread on peoples attempts to clean the screen.

The Shure E500s don't come with filter replacements.

I would personally much rather buy IEMs with removable filters and $2 worth of hydrogen peroxide to clean them.

And, honestly, i bought two quarts of 5% peroxide from costco for less than $2, and it only takes a few tablespoons to de-wax and sterilize a pair of tri-flanges and a pair of filters.

ER4s have replaceable filters. You can get spare ones easily off eBay.

For my UM2s which don't have replaceable filters, I've never run into a problem for the past half a year. The supplied wire loop comes handy at times to clean out any earwax clogged in there, but I barely used it.

So long you clean your ears regularly, I don't see there would be any problem.

how would you go about removing the filters from iM716 without slaughtering them? Could i soak the tip of the bud in the peroxide? if i tilt it none should get down the tube... but i can't guarantee it.
