IEM users: who's stopped using a portable amp after upgrading earphones?

I'm curious about the running the headphones straight out
of the lineout idea. I'm going to check this out, seems
far to simple but who knows. Maybe we'll all be forking
over cash for mini stepped attenuators soon.
