Hi HF -

I bought Etymotic HF5's on a whim earlier this year, and found that I loved them very quickly. Since then, I have been Jonesing for one of their flagship IEMs (er4p/s). My biggest complaint about the Ety's is lack of bass (obvious, I know). Otherwise I love the detail, fit, and clarity of my HF5s.

Does anyone have experience to share about ER4P's v other IEMs at/below that price point? Basically, I am looking to see what options are out there for $300-ish that would have the clarity and fit of Ety's, but more bass. Or, if you think the ER4p meets the baseline of HF5+Enhanced Bass let me know that as well.

The thing is, as soon as you start increasing the bass, this affects the clarity. Er4 is not hf5 with more bass, although I haven't heard the newer er4xr, but doubt it. Maybe you can check the new Massdrop plus iem - there are 8 more days for the drop (you'll have to wait a few months to get it) but some people claim it's like ety with added bass

I did look at those, I will look into the MD iems more for sure. Have you used HF5 & ER4? Is the bass more prominent in the ERs compared to the HF5s? thanks for the reply

Sorry, it's been a few years but IMO there's no difference in quantity - if any its very marginal at best. If you want more bass and you want the ety form factor your best bet will probably be the er4xr. If you just want clarity and a bit more bass you might also look into the upcoming brainwavz b2 phoenix, it will be under 100 bucks and should be released in a week or two https://www.head-fi.org/threads/bra...iscussion-thread.540222/page-94#post-13752652

At some point soon I am really wanting to get CIEMs (or maybe just shells, maybe just tips) - are any of the suggestions here easily "upgradable" to custom? I know there are lots of aftermarket options but some earphones seem to be easier/better to upgrade.

Those are some intriguing options, thanks for the recs. I did buy a pair of ER4Ps, as I got a good deal on a used pair and bundled it with another item from that seller. BUT - I think I will still try out a new set of IEMs very soon. I would like to branch out brand-wise and these look like great suggestions.

The other IEMs I have are the MEE Audio Pinnacles - whose sound I quite like as well.

Have you considered the ER4XR? I think, if they go on sale for example on Black Friday, I'm going to buy a pair.
