I ride some pretty rough trails on my bicycle while listening to music. I want something other than the current over ear phone junk I'm using now.

Do I need a custom molded IEM to keep from them popping out when the going gets rough?

Sorry dude, but for safety reasons, I doubt you're going to find too many people willing to recommend IEMs for trail riding. They aren't even recommended for jogging.

Custom molds, however, may be a totally different story, but I have no experience with it, so hopefully someone can pipe in. My presumption is the safety issues would still persist, but suddenly a huge cost gets factored in.

Best thing I can think of is just trying out some cheapie pair of ear buds with a headband. Kind of fits right in the middle of headband style and ear bud style.

Check these:

This was just to give you an idea of what I mean though - I do not put any recommendation to the particular models, having never heard them

I don't need to hear the outside world while trail riding. Just to see the joggers/walkers ahead of me.

I was considering the UE super.fi 5 pro or custom 7 Pro's. I'm afraid the super.fi's would just pop out regularly.

I don't think I've had a single situation come up where my iM716 has even come CLOSE to popping out. There is, however, the issue with microphonics... but that's besides the point

I've never had any of my IEMs just pop out. The E5 will sometimes work itself a little loose when I use the soft grey tips. As far as the Super.Fi goes, they stay put very well, particularly if you use the right tip size for you. I don't ride, but I do tend to get pretty sweaty walking around in SoCal and they've never slid out.

Something to be aware of with customs: When I get really sweaty I find that sweat will get between my ears and the edge of the UE-10 and work it's way towards the tip. I've always pulled them out before the sweat makes it all the way, but I don't think I'd recommend them for riding or doing anything where you sweat a lot.

One thing you should definitely do is to route the cables inside your shirt when you ride. If the cable snags something you're in for several bad things: 1) Pain... having IEMs ripped out of your ears is damn painful. 2) You may break the cable. 3) You may lose your IEMs or have them damamged from falling. Balanced armatures are sensitive to impact.

Do remember that you are virtually deaf to all outside noises when you're wearing IEMs (you're unlikely to hear anything shy of a gun shot if you have the volume up at all). If you are going to be riding, make sure to excersize added precautions. Even when walking around I find that I scan my surroundings a lot and I still sometimes miss things.

Speaking of riding, how many of you all listen to your IEMs while driving?

I do. I know I shouldn't but my Infinity component speakers sound like crap compared to good cans. They've spoiled me.

Prozakk, you could always put duct tape over your ears just to be sure they don't slip out, who knows, it might add some bass

You could always buy some lesser IEMs like 5Pro to get a taste, then make a nice upgrade.

Thanks to everyone for posting.

I'm now thinking iM716 for trail riding, UE Triple X's for serious listening. Still way cheaper than UE 7Pro's.

Dane thanks for the heads up about this forum.

Duct tape...is that a crack about me being a Texan? Just because I live in the south doesn't mean I have it, nor bailing wire, in my possesion. LOL.

You're welcome, you are now a part of team empty wallet

Duct tape, nope I've never used it. Not even for that time when my bumper was falling off that day after I snagged a piece of re-bar at the job-site.

I mountain bike very hard (jumps, rock gardens...) and have never had a problem with my E2Cs falling out (though my iPod has broken 3 times). I also Snow ski with them and take 50+ foot gaps and they have never come out.

Have you used IEMs? You won't be able to hear anything. It's a bad idea.

Hearing on a trail is not needed. I highly doubt I'll have to worry about any trees running me over...
