I am in need of a new pair of phones. I will be using them strictly on stage in a wireless monitoring environment. The obvious choice to me for a while was the UM2, but the UM3X aren't that much more, and the extra driver is always nice.

My big question is this: I hear nothing (mostly) but good things about the IE8, but I haven't really been able to find out any info about them in a live environment. Any input on this?

Also, I have considered the JH-5s, but not sure if I want to jump into customs.

UM3X is much more accurate than IE8 IMO. It's nice and neutral throughout the bass and midrange with roll-off in the upper treble, where as IE8 has somewhat elevated/sweetened upper bass/low midrange and have a fuller than neutral sound. IE8 is meant more for fun, audiophile listening IMO, whereas UM3X was originally designed as a monitor for musicians, so it's supposed to be more neutral. Don't get me wrong - UM3X is still a fun sounding IEM - just not as colored as IE8. I would say UM3X sounds more realistic, while IE8 sounds more euphoric/dreamy.

I can't think of a single redeeming nature of the IE8s which makes them good for stage monitoring... whereas the UM3X was MADE for stage monitoring

the um3x is a stunning monitor. though i am not a musician, i trouble shoot for certain bands and find the um3x to be excellent. the ie8 is a home listening earphone - it won't be good - especially with its hyper bass - will give you the wrong signals.
