For the DAC, any of the well received high end $2k to $6k ones will do.

Yggdrasil, Pavane, Directstream, HoloSpring, Mytek Manhattan, Terminator etc...

For the amps, buying any of the $2-3k tube amp from DNA, Eddie Current or ampsandsound is highly recommended.

The HD800 can not only scale immensely, but can be transformed with the better equipment.

One of the best setups you can have is: Gumby ($900-$1000 used) -> iCan Pro ($1000 used) -> HE1000 v2 ($2100 new recently or $1800-$1900 used). It’s a stellar setup for $4k. Beyond this anything else from DAC to headphone, you are getting very large investment for very small return.

Schiit Gungnir Multibit. I have one myself and to be honest I'm not sure what to think. I also think that "anything beyond X has greatly diminishing returns" is a common false claim that people make about a whole bunch of stuff at various prices.

I am quite happy with my Moon 230 amp driving my HD 800.

There is a lot fo great music out there sounding awesome with a properly matched HD800 ...

I personally love to listen for example to

- Carla Bruni - "French Touch" or "No Promises",

- Jazz at the Pawnshop (all albums)

- Sophie Zelmani - "Sing and Dance" among others

- Amber Rubarth - "Good Mystery" or "Sessions from the 17th Ward"

and lots of others ... :)

have fun!
