Hi you!

My father needs a new DAP and I think this one could be the choice. Only needs three things:

1.- Ability to read CUE files

2.- Capable to display covers without great effort, for example, renaming the file to "cover" or "folder"

3.- Enough power on SE to drive the Beyerdyamic DT1990 Pro (250 ohm)

What do you think about it? He won't use streaming and will use to hear classical music.

Thank you very much!
I use Beyerdynamic DT770 (80 ohms) converted by Custom Cams to Balanced Input with a Balanced cable. I converted to Balanced Output because I did not think SE was adequate. If your Father's DT1990 are 250 ohms I would think they may struggle. I am no expert, I can only comment on my own experiences.

Mal: What about running a small amp with it?

Yes, the coaxial output is other highlight of this DAP. I could give him my Xduoo XD05, although a great brick would be generated, hehe.

What about covers and CUE files?

Mal: Just finished reading a review of the DX120, and the reviewer said he tried to run his Sennheiser HD800 single ended out of the DX120 and was not good at all. However, when he ran it balanced it sounded good. The HD800 is rated at 300 ohms. The review was from Headfonia. It would seem as though the only way to go is with a amp that has enough power out of their single ended output jack?

You want to drive HD800 from a single ended output?

Most portables won't do it, but I think DX150 + iBasso AMP7 should do the trick on single ended.

BTW, that is a 3.5mm single ended, so taking them portably would require a cable as well :)

My father is going to drive me crazy looking for a new DAP. As I said, he only needs a player capable to read CUE files, covers without making any conversion and enough powerful to drive headphones like the DT1990. I recommend him this Dx120, but he wants a higher level one. He won't need wifi or BT.

I would still recommend DX150 + AMP7, that makes a really good choice.

AFAIK, DX150 can easilt read cue files and cover art without a hassle :)

I also have the DT1990 and paired with the Sony WM1A seems to be a little unpowered, but since I have that player I discovered that the new IEMs have nothing to envy the headphones. Sadly he doesn't like IEMs... I will send him your opinion and let him decide. Thank you very much for your help! Have a great day!

Yes, his DT1990 can't run balanced without a mod...

I have had the DX120 since mid September 2018 and have not experienced any charging problems. I use a Samsung USB Mains charger and never takes more than 2 hours to charge from 20%. It runs for about 7 hours down to 20%. I play Flac 16 bit and 24 bit. I use 2 x 400Gb Sandisk cards. I load the cards via my PC in a card reader not directly connected to the DAP. This is an excellent DAP. I have been listening to "Hi-Fi", as it was called then, for 48 years, and I must say the quality of the music produced by this little machine is incredible.

I think there may be a problem with the DX120 when charging from 0%. I've only had mine for about a month. If recharging from around 15 to 20% it only takes 2 hours to fully charge to 100%. But I was doing burn-in until the DX120 went to 0% and shut down. Then charging took much longer. it took 2.5 hours to get to only 24%, then another 1.5 hours to get to 38%. I then went to bed so I don't know how long it took to get to 100%. But this is the 2nd time that I charged it from 0% and the 1st time took an in-proportionally long time to go from 0 to 100%...about 7 hours.

During burn-in, to run down from 82% to 0% took 10.5 hours. This is with the screen off for most of the time.

This is the charger I use: https://www.anker.com/products/variant/powerport-speed-1-usbc/A2014113

NOTE: This could be a display problem as I read in this thread that unplugging the charger and plugging it back in showed that the charge percentage suddenly jumped from a lower number to a higher percentage:

"I have noticed that when I am using the fast charger and check after about 1,5 hours the DX120 displays that it has 75% charge, disconnecting and reconnecting it to the charger, the dx120 suddenly displays that is has been fully charged, so the display is not 100% accurate."

...but I didn't try to check that.

Also I still love this device.

1A and 1Z have little power, I'm sure neither won't drive Amiron or 1990 quite that well, but DX120 should be able to :)

Either way, between DX120 and DX150 + AMP7, DX150 provides both better sound and flexivility, except for the dual microSD slot that DX120 has
