I have just unpacked my new Ibasso D4 and am getting no sound when I plug it into my macbook. The headphone socket using a short interconnect to the mac will provide a signal which works through the amp section. The usb lead is providing power (blue light comes on on the back and red light on the front when the unit is switched on) but there is no audio signal. I have tried closing and restarting itunes and I have restarted the computer all to no avail.

Am I missing something obvious? I can't see anything in the "owners manual" and the Ibasso website seems to be down.

Any ideas or is my unit defective?

Thanks

Put a 9 volt in there and disconnect the usb.

When I use my D4 with my Macbook it's like this.
USB => D4 (DAC) => amp (LD MKIII) => headphones.

and I have to change my sound setting from sound card to the D4 (DAC). You get both power and sound signal via usb

why would he want to disconnect the USB to get USB audio BassoonHead? the amp gets power from the batteries (unless you chose otherwise), the dac gets power from the USB (AFAIK). the issue here will just be he hasnt selected 'USB Audio Device' in the sound prefs. I would personally be using batteries for the amp section as they provide more power than the 5V provided by USB, you can use a better range of higher powered opamps if you do this

The USB into the D4 w/ the switch on the back on USB unless you want to power the unit w/ an internal battery would provide power to the headphone via the 1/8" left jack in the front of the D4.

Because it looked to me like he was doubling up on the input. A mini plug from the sound card and the USB. Perhaps it's viable but not something I've done with mine.

System preferences>sound>output

Select your output source with iTunes playing, keep selecting until you hear some music; the correct source should have USB or iBasso in the name.

ahh I see what you mean, thought it might have been something like that. the D10 has the same mechanism where it will choose analogue first, usb second and optical then coax. unplugging one and reconnecting it forces it to choose that one, but surely you meant to say remove the mini from the line in? this would make it choose the USB (if its selected as the audio device in prefs) removing the USB hardly makes it choose USB does it? it would make it choose the analogue line-in if its connected

No, but I saw someone trying to get his new toy working and was going for the instant gratification he would get with my suggestion.

Using the D4 as a DAC was a new experience for me and I waited for a bit before I tried it. And it was great!

Could anyone explain how to get both the DAC and the amp working simultaneously? I found when I used USB, the volume control did nothing and I concluded the amp was off.

Well hopefully the OP will figure out how to use the USB dac section and after all the suggestions here, post back to let people know.

Thanks to everyone.

The answer was that I had not selected the sound card as the output settings in my mac preferences as a number of you pointed out.

I am sat here writing my reply listening to the Jimmy Cobb quartet in unfeasibly excellent sound from my D4. What a sensational bit of kit.

By the way, you if you click the volume icon while holding the option key down, you can select an output device without having to go into system preferences...

Glad you got it working but I had little doubt. You might want to change the title of the thread then.
