Hey Head-fiers.....well my wallet is officially dying, thank you for that
smily_headphones1.gif
I would hate to come off snobbish with my question though I know I'm going to appear so. Please know I'm not particularly wealthy, but have rather sold a lot of possessions to afford everything I've bought since I've become a head-fi member.

I currently purchased an SDS XLR from Single Power Audio to go with my R10s and I'm loving it. My source is a Bel Canto DAC 3. I feel a little awkward using a mid-fi DAC with such a top end amp and headphone. I also currently am awaiting a second pair of R10s which should be here by the end of the week, I currently own the bass heavy version and wanted to also own the bass light version.

So my question is.....
Should I save up for a new DAC ($6000.00 or under)
or should I take the money which I have and invest in an AKG K1000 since I finally have an amp that can power that headphone. IF I get the K1000 now, I can invest in a DAC later, but it will set me back about a month, maybe two....as summer time is very slow in my business field.

So the question is....which do I buy first.....the K1000 or the superior DAC.......the DAC i was considering by the way is the MSB Platinum. If you have a different suggestion please share.....remember $6,000 is my absolute maximum.

K1000, but only with a speaker amp.

You can buy a DAC any day of the year. Show up in a store any day you want to pay, walk out with a dac at least 10000 times better than the junk they made last year. patrick reference was unavoidable in a K1000 thread, but im serious about the DAC. The high end designers are getting better at building DAC's and more importantly the output stages and clocks.

K1000 are getting harder to find, and with the audio budget you mention not out of reason at all. They compliment the R10 quite well, but I hope you have a speaker amp. Perhaps the SDS-XLR will do them justice, but they are TRICKY headphones to drive well. I suppose the R10 are tricky to drive too, but for different reasons.

Get the K-1000 - they don't come up every day. Further, you don't need the best of the best to enjoy them. Angle them out and put on some music!

There are plenty of DACs, however, and you can readily find a good one.

First off, the Bel Canto isn't a mid-fi product (Bel Canto doesn't make mid-fi). It's a very good DAC - right now. Can you get better? Probably, but know that digital products are almost out-of-date the moment you purchase it. So I'd wait till last before upgrading the DAC which is already good enough.

I'd also recommend the AKGs as your initial purchase. Then look into better amplification if you find your present rig isn't giving you all you want.

Oh, and enjoy.
