I wonder why Headroom likes the HD201 so much?

I feel they are lacking in bass which makes them sound thin.

I like their look though, they do look fancy. They're pretty comfy as well, and small enough to be portable.

If these things sounded like the HD25sp, they'd be amazing. I use my HD201's as portables sometimes, but usually I use them in the library when working on my laptop. I always adjust the EQ to boost the bass.

I think you hit the nail on the head there - they're quite comfortable, portable and quite nice looking. There are far better cans out there for all those factors but the HD201 does them all well for its price.

From your post and your sig it looks like you may be going unamped. Heed well this portion of HeadRoom's HD201 page, with which I absolutely agree (emphasis added):
...have to set the player's volume near full-out to get decent volume levels into the HD-201; any dedicated headphone amp will easily overcome this issue while also DRAMATICALLY upping the musical detail clarity & dynamic range of this headphone
Even with an amp it is not a bass-heavy headphone, but I think you'll find that an amp (or sufficiently strong source) takes this headphone to a much more enjoyable level.

Anyone running HD201s from a computer's built-in soundjack should also have a look at this thread about running it from an inexpensive USB soundcard instead.

I don't have an amp and I don't really want one. The 201's cost me 20 bucks so I don't expect them to sound that great. They aren't bad though, I like their flavor every once in a while.

I've got them on now, the definitely don't sound bad at all for 20 bucks. I like them alot more than my 212s, which have too much bass.

I run my 201's out of my MacBook's sound card, which is way better than the soundcard on my Dell tower.

I was looking at an iBasso amp, it's cheap and has a bass boost. Maybe it'd be a wise investment...

And that is exactly why Headroom ranks them highly. Those rankings are value rankings. Basically, they're measuring bang for the buck.
