I received a pair of E5's today and tried all the different plugs. I was surprised to get a very different fit with the E5's compared to the E3's which I already owned. The shape of the E5's only allows them to be inserted but so far in the ear. I had been inserting the E3's much further in my ear.
I guess that explains why I kept getting the plugs stuck in my ears. (The earphone body would come out and leave the plug in my ear. Last time it happened I had to wake my wife up to get them out and she told me she would make me go to the hospital next time it happened. She was joking.... I think.)
This also explains why the Shure tri-flange with the long stem fit so much worse than the Ety tri-flange with the shorter stem. I had settled on either the smallest grey plug or the Ety tri-flange as my choice. The grey one for comfort and the tri-flange for isolation. Unfortunately, neither were ideal as I couldn't stand to wear the tri-flange for long periods of time.
When I didn't shove the E3's deep into my ear it didn't feel right. Because it would stick out it would move around and irritate my ear. It was this movement I found more bothersome then anything else.
If find the E5's to be more comfortable for a couple of reasons. Because the body of the earphones is larger they sit over my canal and help with the isolation. And the memory cord keeps them in place better. I find the middle sized clear plug to the be most comfortable. I thought this same plug was intolerable with the E3.
I'm still getting used to the sound. My initial impressions are positive. They do the same things the E3's did well but with better top end articulation which was my complaint about the E3's.
I'd read a lot on E3 versus E5 but never this aspect of fitting. Maybe I was just being stupid putting it so far in my ear but I can't be the only one. Now the shape of various Shure plugs makes more sense. They do seem better suited to the E5 than the E3.
