I think we need more info.

When are you going to use it (gym, etc.)? How durable does it need to be? Number of albums you want to carry around as a minimum? Do you have a rough price point you're trying to stay under? What OS do you use? Already have music of a specific file type? Is there anything off limits (you didn't mention MD)? Any expectation of cans that will be used with it? That kinda of stuff.

BlessingX's questions are really important, so if you do get the chance, please let us know what your wants/ needs are, esp. your budget.

A few commonly recommended portables:
Panasonic CT-470
Panasonic CT-570 (refer to www.headphone.com for info on them and do a search here for the 570)

Sony D777
Sony D-E905

Definitely scrounge this forum for info. And if you find some good threads, it wouldnt hurt to post them. While I am not done with the Headphones FAQ, it wouldnt hurt if you shared some helpful theads, in case such an FAQ is made for portables.

G'luck.

Blessing: I love the EBTG CD. I've listened to it 3 times straight tonight

offtopic question to Wortel,

Why is your nickname Wortel?
What does it mean according to you? I mean, has it a meaning or something? Cause in Dutch it means carrot.

Nanahachi recommended some really good pcdp's, but two good mp3 players are the Ipod and Nomad Jukebox 3. In general:

Nomad Jukebox - better sound quality
Ipod - more portable, better interface, more features, easier to use, etc...

Hey Lisa,

Its the same !
Wortel also means Carrot in Indonesian !!!

(maybe it is because Dutch ruled Indonesia for 350 years a while ago...)

I'll be using it when Im not at my computer. Like when i go out for a walk or go to uni.
Won't need to be too durable Im not gonna be doing anything rough.
I guess I wouldn't wanna carry many CD's with me 1-2 at the most.
I use Win XP.
I would be looking at around $200-300AU. (so 150-200US)
I have a few gig (14GB) of mp3s.
I'll will most proberbly using earbuds. I like buds and woundn't like going in public with cans on.

Hope this helps

In this case, I'd look for a used 2nd generation 10GB or 20GB iPod. Unlike my D-777, I have yet to make my iPod skip a beat. Since you already have most of your music MP3'd, it would be easy to store most (if not all) of them on an iPod (depending on the size, of course). Earbuds should work great directly out of the iPod. If you're lucky (and be patient), you can find 10GB iPods for about $150, and 20GB iPods for about $230.

Another alternative is MD's, but since I'm not very familiar with MD, (other than that it's fairly small/compact, but you need to tote MD's around,) I'll let someone else comment on them.

Quick question MusicLover, does the NJB sound better through its headphone out, or are you just saying it has better sound because of the option for line out? I had the original of both and I thought the iPod sounded much better. I didn't have decent phones back then, so not sure how that would impact the results, but with bad phones the NJB lost.

What/where is Bahasa?

Back to your question.

yes you could go ipod. It's nice and small, but there's also the possibility of a PCDP which plays mp3's.
Advantage of these things are
-you can carry a lot of music with you (700 MB of mp3 per CDR)
-cheaper
-you can play your regulair CD's with them too.

The cons are
-larger
-can't think of another con over a HD player.

I recommend you look into iRiver players. They give good soundquality.
