Hey guys I currently have a pair of AT A900 that im running without an amp. I use these for gaming and music.

I can go with open or closed headphones and I dont want to spend over $500 for the headphones. I dont mind if it needs an amp. Dont care if they are portable.

I listen to almost all types of rock music and thats about it. Just rock. (Led Zeppelin and Disturbed all the way to stuff like Alkaline Trio and 30 seconds to mars.)

I have heard the Senn HD650 is fantastic for the price but is it good for rock? Also heard Beyer DT880 was good.

Last point is they need to be a substantial upgrade with music from what I already have(A900). - I know this will vary with user but I would like some input anyway.

Too many headphones! Need help!

Thanks guys!

I'll second the SR225 for your needs. They're great cans for rockin' out! Due to the popularity of the HF-1 there are quite a few people selling theirs in Headphones For Sale/Trade forum right now too. You can probably get a *great* deal on a good used pair and help a fellow Head-Fi'er out at the same time. Bonus.

I will second, third, fourth, whatever it is for the SR-225. I have a good sized collection of mid priced headphones, and the Grados definetly rock better than any other. Though I prefer the "comfy" pads that came with my SR-60s to the "bowls" that come with the 225s.

If you are intersted in closed cans, the Beyer DT-250/250s do very well with rock. They have a nice warm midrage and good extension at both ends. Not as much bass as the DT770, but a much warmer and livelier midrange.

By the way, how do the A900s do with rock. I am looking for one more clsed can, and I am considering something on the Audio-Technica line. Probably either the A500s (on the cheap end) or the A900 (on the higher end). It looks like I listen to similar music (minus the led zep.)

Heck, you might as well get a HF-1 while the getting's good. I used to own this combo-

Alessandro MS-2 for the music.
DT770 for the movies and gaming. And bass heavy music.

Just a heads up, the DT880 isn't too good for Rock. It is better for Jazz, vocals and classical. I own a pair and I love it to death...but that's because I mainly listen to Jazz and Classical.

The HD580/600/650 is a much better all rounder cans that can be good for Jazz, Classical and Rock. They are not the BEST for Rock alone, but they are do rank pretty high up there.

Grado generally is better known for Rock. If Rock is all you listen to (now and future), then you should just got the HF-1 that everyone here is raving about.

I will depart from the other suggestions here, and advise you not to get the 225's. If a Grado phone is your fancy, then I'd recommend something higher up the line. Perhaps a SR325i, MS2i, RS2, or even a RS1 if you can get one used. These will all represent better value for the dollar than the 225's.

If you are willing to consider something outside the Grado line, try the Beyer dt990. They "rock" every bit as hard as many in the Grado line.

I'm going with augustwest, I recommend getting the sr325i's, for the price they're a much better build than the sr225's. Grado's can't be beat for rock IMO.

Interesting, I'm in the same boat as you.

The A900 are awesome for games, but lack for music. I'm aiming for the SA-5k (as soon as the credit card comes in the mail). I'm not much of a rocker though.

Wow sounds like Grado is the way to go for rock. Some everyone would pretty much rather have Grado 325i over Senn. HD650 for rock?

Also, Where the heck can I buy Grado other than ebay? Want to buy new if I can. Ive never bought anything used before and dont want to start now unless I have to.

Check out our sponsors above - not only are they shipped to you asap, I believe all the Grado sellers offer a money back guarantee too (30 days?) - no harm no foul!
