I'm not familiar with the Micro enough to compare, so if someone will chime in here..

I believe you are definitely in error here.
1. Custom playlists are not smart playlists
2. Rating songs on the Carbon itself - not in the user manual
3. They are the same money (MSRP only; I know the street price is less in some areas)
You are correct on the battery life and 1 extra GB only.

Besides neither the naked mini or Carbon are good choices for Bartholomew, they are HDD players - he wants to drop it several times! If you know you're going to drop your audio player, I would recommend a flash player.

Similar, similar. Playing songs a lot is similar to rating them as they're played in the order one likes them, and if you like it, you listen to it more.

MSRP is a ripoff. The Karma is still $300 by MSRP, and $240 in newegg. The Carbon's $209 on newegg and $250 or so by MSRP. The price it's at with good resellers is what I go by.

If one is to drop their player, I recommend a $20 walkman. They'll all break if you drop it, might as well break something cheaper.

Interesting. Over in the ipodlounge, lots of people like that rating system, 'cause it lets the song rise up or down in the "top rated" queue. With some players like the iPod, you have to listen to the end of a song for the play count to rise. I'm curious what you think of the sound quality of today's flash players? I've gone from MD to flash players to HDD players and, now with the flash capacity/$ beginning to catch up, I will be seriously looking at this again myself.

Rio and iRiver flash players have 16-18 mW @ 16 ohms output. This differs slightly from the iAudio and iRiver HD players with a 20 mw @ 16 ohms output, incase you've heard them, for the sake of comparison. If you're driving sensetive headphones, don't expect this to effect things much. Unless the chip in the player has horribly high distortion ratings and a crappy frequency response, it should sound just fine. If you're comparing it to the Rio Karma or the iPod which have 55 mW @ 16 ohms outputs, the bigger ones will go louder. Any well designed flash player will sound the same as the others when driven within its limits. It's the ones with 6 or 8 mW @ 16 ohms outputs that'll suck and won't even be able to power certain buds to decent levels.

If you're going to test them, find a way to do it blindly. Reading around here gives me the feeling that placeabo rears its head into far too many test results, and you get 'opinions' like "this player is too bright!!!" even if it measures with a flat frequency response and distortion ratings 0.0001% different than the player it was compared to across the spectrum.

im not going to drop it alot, but my cd players have had some abuse, but of course my mp3 player wouldnt be as abused because i will always kep it in my pocket, it wont be left around waiting to be knocked off a table or something

micro sounds best o far after reading the micro thread here...

and i do have a flash player but it only holds a VERY limited amount so i literally have to change songs everyday, and that is so annoying id rather use my cd player...

Then I'd recommend a warrenty.

Creative gets a LOT of talk around here now. They recently decided to spend 100 million in advertizing to get the word out about the Micro. I suggest you try them all or consult someone who's tried them all before getting one or the other. They all have their fair share of rave reviews around here.

i havent heard anything really bad bout the micro except that the scroll thing can be hard to like pinpoint songs ebcause it was designed for fast ascrolling but this could be changed by changing the sensitivity controls

Hey! I happen to think that my Carbon is absolutely adorable. You do win on the girliness factor though.

The Micro does look like a good product, though I have no experience with it. However, I have been hearing some battery problems, so you might want to wait for that to clear up.
