...and then I came to this website. Some of you guys have achieved a whole new realm of uber-geek with this headphone stuff. It's pretty impressive how involved it can get. I didn't come here with any expectations, but what I've discovered is that there is definitely something I need to add to my arsenal of audio/video.

I fly the E2 Hawkeye for the USNavy and so far my hearing is just as good as when I started flying 8 years ago... I double up on protection as required but am religious about protection outside of work. I never want to reach a point later in life when I can't enjoy the nuances of a good track.

I do like my music loud and precise and have always had decent equipment. My dedicated HT runs a Panny900u Projector on a 92" screen, an Onkyo 603 and Klipsch Synergy's with a Dayton 12" DIY sub. It's plenty for a 12x15 room.

I enjoy online FPS games... currently playing XBOX360 COD4 about 6hours per week, and I need to be quieter at times. I thought there would be numerous audiophile solutions for guys wanting to upgrade the absolute POS Microsoft headset options... but I've been left wanting. I'm a fairly astute online searcher and have exhausted every technique I know of for finding the elusive easy solution and have found none.
The guys I play with are HUGE into real-time in-game voice and we talk a lot. I always play the in-game-voice through the speakers and bypass the headset speaker entirely. I've never had a problem with the mic pickup but I know there's room for improvement.

I have tossed the idea of a headset because they're universally shunned, so the TurtleBeach et.al is out and there's no true direct plug&play solution for the XBOX. So I'm going separates.

For headphones, the list is long but getting shorter.
Beyerdynamics-AudioTechnica-AKG-Ultrasone-Koss, all companies have various recommended models and I'll pick one frontrunner here shortly. For now I'll just plug it into the jack on my Onkyo... perhaps future funds and interest will lead me to the JVC amp/processor setup for some more depth and imaging to my online gameplay.

For the mic, I'm going to purhcase a Zalman clip-on and hack it into the wires of my current XBOX headset cord.

Thanks to all the guys on this forum who've helped me without knowing it, you guys do geeks around the world proud... and I mean that in the most awesome way.

The prefix of your Head-fi "call sign" is awesome.

BTW, what is your actual call sign. As a civilian, I long for one. Perhaps you could tell you colleagues about me and this post and come up with one?

Welcome.

You haven't truly geeked-out until you get a tattoo.

I used to work with a guy who had a tattoo from the "V" science fiction tv mini-series.

It was a bit trippy. I mean i respected him as a friend and a coworker, but "V" wasn't that good. And it was *ages ago.

He had the logo on his jeep, too.

Or you've never played enough D&D. It's been over 25 years for me and I recognized it right away

Sadly, I recognized it right away.

Thanks for the warm welcome... and the tat makes me proud.

I fly the Hawkeye out of NAS Norfolk. Prior to the Navy I was a flying-trapeze artist and "Freakshow" was a given the day I showed up to my first fleet squadron. Mostly I go by Freak... and I don't even have any ink. HAHA!, that rhymes.

Anyway, I bought myself a Zalman clip-on and soldered it onto the stock connector for my 360 controller. It clips perfectly to my shirt collar and works a lot better than the POS stock headset mic, doesn't pick up anything but my voice.

I also ordered from eBay a Senn HD555. It seemed to be one of the most often recommended "all around" 1st Headphone for a initial sub $100 purchase. I paid $76+$14=$90 from Dakmart through eBay.

I mentioned this to one of my buddies at work and his eyes lit up... "WOW, you've gotta come over and check out my setup." He started listing off his gear and I couldn't keep up... seems like you guys (us guys?) are everywhere and I never noticed.

Here's my baby:
