If I understand, closed cans keep sound in and distracting outside sounds outside, is that about right?

It also sounds to me that mabey the open cans sound better?

They will be used for computer CD's (with workmates nearby), home stereo, and listening to the TV through the stereo, (movies and other shows) while my wife studies or reads.

Sounds like I need closed, but......

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks,
John

I use the Sennheiser HD280 Pro for movies and other situations that require isolation.

Closed headphones can get pretty good if you're willing to spend the money. The cheapest good sounding closed phones are probably the Sony MDR-V6 and the 280 Pro. Beyond that, the quality level increases but so does the cost.

There might be some semi-open phones that provide a degree of isolation. The Ety family of canal phones are as good as the best open phones if you don't mind sticking things in your ear.

Kelly's review of closed cans (the link provided by Cyberius will take you there) is very good. The only one in his list that I have personally owned is the Sony V6. I would highly recommend them if you don't have a bright source. They sound good right out of my computers CD-ROM drive at work. My problem with them started when I paired them with the Sony D25s portable. Not good IMO.

Anyway, I would add one to Kelly's list to consider: the Audio-Technica ATH-A500 for $99 at Audio Cubes. Despite my complaints about the build quality they are a great sounding pair of cans for the money. They don't seem to isolate as well as the Sony V6's, but I haven't heard any complaints from co-workers and they seem to keep out noises up to a moderate level - I can still tell when someone is talking to me which is a must for work. They are much more comfortable than the Sony V6's (which I thought were pretty comfortable themselves); I have been able to wear them for over 2 hours without getting too hot or feeling like my head was being squashed.

From experience, yes, you need closed phones. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches when she's yelling at you to turn it down because its annoying her, but you don't hear her because of the music.
