Well, at least for the time being. My current system is listed below, and I just won an auction for a NEC CDR-602 which I'll be using as a transport. I just recently acquired a bolder PSU for my art dio, and it has taken it to a level of refinement that is simply unbelievable. Maybe I'll upgrade my interconnects, but it looks as if for the time being, I'm done.

For the time being are the key words

Weird, I was looking for such an NEC drive also but I won mine a few hours ago. Good thing we didn't try to bid against each other.

You have any mods on the DI/O?

The NEC drive is already calling for some type of mod.

yeah, the nec drive does want some mods

, although I'm not quite sure yet what exactly. I think some searching is in order. And no, my dio is not modded. Yet.

I like the idea of the NEC CD ROM paired with a DAC, i like it so much that I just bought one off eBay myself

. Now, I just have to get a DAC. Am I correct in saying that a used ART DI/O runs about $80-100? The only thing that is iffy is the lack of a remote control system, it would be cool to build one that would just press the button/make certain connections in order to skip from track to track. IMO, it would be a fun project worth attempting.

I don't have a stancor psu here to do a direct ab comparison(mine was faulty). From my initial listening(I only got it on monday), there are two words that I would use to describe it: smooth and refined. The stock psu gives the dac a sort of gritty and disjointed sound. The bolder posses none of this.

Which Bolder did you get? The Nitro power cord one? Insane that it costs more than the DAC itself.

actually, I'm not sure if it's the nitro power cord one(I picked it up used). However, the cord does have braid on it. . . did the old ones have black braid?

edit: not the nitro cable.

Ah ok. I have that pre-nitro one myself. It does indeed sound pretty smoooooth.

gastro54, I thought a new DI/O is like 100?

It's time to start team NEC drive.

I think a power supply upgrade for this and recabling is what the doctor ordered.

I need to get some caddys. Did you guys find a place to get cheap ones?

give em a call at 1-800-356-5844

The lack of a remote control on the nec doesn't really bother me, since my system is at my bedside. It will continue to be at my bedside for the forseeable future (college, etc). You know, the nec doesn't have a captive power cord, so that's up for replacement. Find any mods Ian?

I was reading a bunch of stuff on audioasylum on possible mods. Havn't decided yet. I've still yet to find a caddy

I threw mine out a while ago thinking who needs them anymore.

Although the power cord is replaceable, the IEC female costs like WAY more than the drive already haha. They're like $17 each so I don't know if it's worth replacing the power cord. I think the power supply may be worth replacing.

http://www.geocities.com/leojar2002/cd601main.html has some stuff on modding it.
