After several months (with Sennheiser HD-580 & Perreaux SXH1) I have this opinion.
Although the sound with 1212m seems more "cleaned", IMHO 0404 reveal more details. And more punching bass, too.
Is it just me !? Maybe I have to try some online hearing test with these two... I think i'm happy with 0404, but I don't wanna crap hardware (or less good, ok) on my PC.

Bye

You aren't the only person who feels this way. There are many who prefer the sound of the 0404 to the 1212m, though on paper the 1212m is technically "better." I've never heard the 1212m myself, but I do very much enjoy the 0404.

I agree that the 1212m sounds "cleaner" or colder to me. I like that though. I don't think that the 0404 has "punchier" bass, I just think there's more of it. As always, no one hears things the same way as everyone else.

Hmm, the first thing I first thing I noticed going from the 2ZS to 0404 was the higher highs and bigger bass. My A700s connected directly to the 0404 made everything sound a little too bright for long periods of listening. The cymbals were burning holes in my ears

Did that change or did you get used to it? I would say the same thing to an extent about when I first got a 1212m. It settled in nicely and I don't find it all that harsh anymore.

the 0404 is bassy and aggressive, not neutral so i dont like it. sorry to sound insinuating but people who like bass and grado sound likes it. one thing can't deny is it has very good soundstage. i mean its still a very detailed card, just i prefer a more laidback signature.

And this was after burn in (if in fact it does exist of course!). I got this from a someone who had used it for a year or more.

Yeah, I don't necessarily believe in "burn-in" for this type of equiptment myself. I do definately think that your ears get used to things the longer you listen to them.
