I just moved to a new house, from a 6 bedroom to a 3 bedroom

(but better!

). So I've to decided to pick up a 17" LCD to save space to replace my 17" CRT (still kicking after 7 years
biggrin.gif
). I've narrowed it down to either the Samsung 172 or the Viewsonic VX700. They are both on par in specs. 25ms response rate, 500:1 contrast ratio, 170 degree viewable angle. Personally I think the Samsung looks a little nicer physically because of its slim boarders. Newegg is selling the Samsung for $499.00 (black) and Viewsonic for $565.00 (just because its silver) both with free fedex shipping.

So should I get either one of these or is there something better out there in the market? I am not a gamer at all and all I do is text editing and web surfing so it ***must*** have crisp text yet soft on the eyes.

I havn't seen the viewsonic but I just got the Samsung 172W last week. I have 15" Sony (analogue) and 22" Apple (digital). Honestly, if all you're doing is text editing and surfing, it doesn't really matter. My other 2 LCDs aren't as bright as the Samsung but the level of brightness and contrast come into play if you're room's light is also very bright and compete's with the monitor. Just make sure to use the digital connection.

congrats on the move, Pepsione1

if i didnt keep buying headphone gear and crap for my aquarium, an LCD would be my next purchase. I personally was checking out the Hitachi CML174SXW (but its main attraction is that its perfect for gaming...which isnt what you want).

i dont have any experience with your two choices, but if you havent already, take a look at Tom's Hardware Guide Display section:
http://www6.tomshardware.com/display/index.html

i'm going to do some reading there today, to entice myself to buy a monitor...if i come across anything helpful, ill try to post it here.

If you can wait until Dell has one of their display sales (ever other week, it seems

), you can often get GREAT deals on Dell LCDs (which are OEM'd by various manufacturers).

We got an 18" UltraSharp 1800FP, which is supposedly a rebranded Planar, for <$400. This display has received very good reviews, and we've been very impressed with it.

Wow, the NEC 1760V does look like a winner. Its cheap too. $409.00 - $20.00 rebate + $10.00 fedex shipping = $399.00
Just under $400.00 for a 17" LCD. I didn't think that was possible!

Now, which color should I get? I do have black speakers but the silver one looks sexy too.

The one for $399.00 is silver right (not white)?

Note that we got an 18" for under $400

It's definitely possible if you're patient and shop around!

$400 for a *NEW* *17" LCD* with *16ms* response rate, *160 degree* viewable angle, *450:1* contrast ratio.

Hehe, I know I am impatient sometimes but considering I've waited for an opportunity to upgrade for past 4 years I guess I am not so bad. I always like to wait for my equipments to died before replacing them. But components will certainly outlast me so no point in waiting in those cases.

Next on the list is the car. Oh lord, I wish I would find it to be smashed next morning when I wake up to go to work.

I have the 1760V (the 25ms model) and it is very nice for the price. I am skeptical of the NEC 16ms model because it is priced $15 cheaper, yet it has a 16ms response time (with other brands this seems to mark up the price $100). It makes me wonder what kind of image quality it has (I haven't seen any reviews of it yet). Although, this may just be some weird newegg pricing, which seems to happen a lot, but I haven't seen the monitor on other sites yet. You may want to go for a monitor with a DVI input because of the better image quality (assuming you have DVI out on your video card). Samsung, Sony and Viewsonic are my favorites in terms of image quality.

And like MacDEF said you may want to look in to buying from Dell because of the big deals they have quite often. Last weekend they had 15% + 15% off on almost all software and peripherals. They seem to always have at least 15% off monitors and free shipping.

We use those 1860's at work, people seem to love them.
