I just got a new A/V receiver that doesn't have a phono preamp and was wondering if someone could recommend one for around $200. I've sort of been looking at a Sumiko Project Phonobox, but have no idea what I'm doing. I've got a Gemini PT 1000 II with a Shure SC35C cartridge. I've never been happy with the dynamic range of my vinyl setup. I realize that I probably need to get rid of the DJ turntable and crappy cartridge, but can't quite afford to do that this month.

So I'm looking for a mid-range preamp that I won't have to upgrade along with my turntable and cartridge when I get around to it. I should maybe add that all my vinyl is poorly recorded punk and hardcore bands.

If no one has time for my dumb vinyl questions, then I was hoping maybe someone could point me to the vinyl equivalent of Head-Fi.

The vinyl forum at www.audioasylum.com is a font of information, however, a few of us use turntables here (and the number grows everytime somebody really listens to one). I had the Sumiko Phonobox. Unless they've upgraded it, it's a really dark sounding unit that doesn't do justice to highs.

An interesting option for your turntable is the $25 battery-powered phono amp sold at Radio Shack (at least it used to be, it's been awhile since I've looked). Sonically, it's better than the Sumiko. In your price range, the NAD isn't bad (not great, but not bad). There's a Parasound in there that I haven't heard, and one by Rotel, IIRC that I haven't heard either.

For your turntable and cartridge, IMO the Radio Shack phono amp is the standout. Do a search on the Vinyl Forum at Audioasylum for "Little Rat".

I like my Parasound PPH-100.

But, the only other phono preamp I've used is built into my receiver.

The Creek OBH-8-SE (MM) and the OBH-9-SE (MC) are very good for the money. A used 8-SE can be had on Audiogon for less than $200 if you are patient.

A used Musical Fidelity XLPS is a great buy. They come up every now and then in the used market for $150-$200. But I'd only go there if you really plan to upgrade in the future. Otherwise, I'd definitely follow Hirsh's advice.

I would go with the Creek OBH-8 or OBH-8SE.These are the best cheap phono amps going right now.You might also be able to find a Monolithic PH1 which is outsatnding at the $350 asking price and a steal at the usual $200 used price.I like the Sumiko but It is not as versitile as either the Monolithic or Creek.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll probably go with Hirsch's recommendation of the $25 Radio Shack preamp to get me through the next couple months, and then pick up a Creek OBH 8 when I upgrade the turntable and cartridge. It's funny because I never would have considered anything from Radio Shack if Hirsch and drewski hadn't recommended it.

That's what I'm using with my Pro Ject on a NAD AV receiver.
