-gaming (counter strike, horror games, etc.)
-closed-back
-analog, not USB
-as flat as it can get
-soundstage not too important, but sure why not
-durable (unlike the a700x)

You should take out A900X as it has some added bass, says the owners of the cans.
 
I have an ATH-A700X but I still can't figure out if it is flat or intended to be used as a studio monitor headphone. If anyone could clarify this I would appreciate it and give you the deserved thumbs up.

You're going to be limited at $120...I'd recommend AKG K550 or AKG K702 if you're willing to go up to $200ish used.

Look into the KRK KNS8400 and KNS6400.
I have never tried these headphones but from what I've read they should be what you're looking for and they're in your price range.

Yes, you're correct. At that price range, I'm not too sure what headphones will fit your needs. Help others can give better advice.

Sennheiser HD 280 Pro very clean sound with balanced bass and treble which never get in the way of each other. It also doesnt have that veiled Sennheiser signature sound.
 
KRK KNS 8400 crystal clear treble which brings everything to life with alot of detail. Bass is just about non-existent even when equalizing the sound. The Audio Technica Ath AD700 sounds like a bass monster compared to the KRK KNS 8400.
 
Source is my pc connected to my Onkyo TX-8555 stereo reciever.

Ok, I got the list down to the following headphones:
 
ATH-M50 
MDR-7506
HD-280
HFI-680
KNS-6400
 
They all seem to fit my needs and need some guidance in picking the most flat-response headphone out of the 5, thanks.
 
edit: should I return my A700X and get one of the 5 above or just keep the A700X? What would you do??

The ATH-M50 has a slight emphasis on the low frequency from what I understand.

Agreed. My M50s do have a noticeable bass boost. Not a ton, but it is there.

I have not heard the MDR-7506, but I've seen many suggestions that it is very close to the same as the MDR-V6. Here's one thread discussing it: http://www.head-fi.org/t/539506/sony-mdr-v6-vs-mdr-7506-there-is-a-difference-in-sound-pictures-too

The V6 is cheaper on Amazon, so I'd go with it over the 7506. Then research the Beyerdynamic EDT 250 pads. The Sony pads tend to flake and wear out quickly; I thought the Beyer pads made my V6s a little more comfortable.

Have you heard the HFI-680 are good for mixing in your research? The S-Logic technology in the Ultrasones makes for a fun soundstage effect, but I would think it might could get in the way of producing music.

Do you know about headphone.com? Select almost any headphone in their menu, and you'll come to a page with a small frequency response graph. Here is the Sony MDR-V6. Click directly on the graph, and you can add additional headphones to the display and pull up ones that are no longer in their main menus.
