OK, have I mentioned that I love the used CD sections of record stores? I realize this is nothing new to most of you, but over the last five or six months, or so, I've expanded my CD collection so much with used CD's. And, of course, at a substantial cost savings over new.

Just today I stumbled into a Coconuts, just to get out of the nasty heat. not really planning to spend any money, in less than thrity minutes I managed to spend ~$60. Here's what I got:

Joni Mitchell - Travelogue
Joni Mitchell - Taming the Tiger
Joni Mitchell - Blue
Julia Fordham - Porcelain
Everything But the Girl - Walking Wounded
Cranberries - Bury the Hatchet
Nelly Furtado - Whoa Nelly

(Can you tell I like female vocals?)

Not the cheapest prices - typically one-third to half of new - but still decent. I've never been burned by anything I've purchased used at a Coconuts (although their prices for new stuff should be considered highway robbery), and they have a great return policy.

What have you all picked up used lately? Feel free to gloat over extreme bargains (you don't have to divulge your sources

). Actual LP's count too, for all you vinyl junkies.

jpelg, I stop at every pawn shop i see for used cd's. Prices range from 3-5 a piece for one item and never more than 3 bucks each if I get 5 or more. Usually they have at least 2-5 hundred to pick from,(some alot more) and if they look like they may be scratched they always have something to pop them into to try them out.

Used CDs aren't nearly as tempting as bargin bin cds. I don't know why, but the cheezier the better.

My CD buying is generally restricted to used, and I sometimes get some fun stuff.

My most recent purchase was Superjoint Ritual -- 'Use Once and Destroy' Truer words were never written.

Last one I purchased was Faithless' Outrospective for $6.

How do you like walking wounded, jp? It's one of my favorite albums...

A great way to shop used is online at half.com or through amazon. I saw Neil Young & Crazy Horse live about two weeks ago and got interested in some more Neil Young CD's. I read lots of consumer reviews on amazon, then bought "Freedom" and "Are You Passionate?" at half.com— it came to less than $13 for the two, including postage. They both arrived the same day (from different sellers) about 5 days later.

Plus...

Several years ago I was in the Virgin store in Times Square and heard a cover version of Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" which included vocals by Thom Yorke of Radiohead. It was quite haunting, as you might imagine. I made a mental note and forgot about it. When I finally got to looking for it, I discovered it was from a british EMI promo-only CD, wherein British EMI artists covered the songs of other British EMI artists. Well yesterday I found said promo CD online for $35.00. What I also learned was that there is a U.S. equivalent on Capitol called "Essential Interpretations." I found (and bought!) a new "used" one (2-CD set) on amazon for under $4.00. It pays to shop around. BTW, the version of "WYWH" is by a band called Sparklehorse, with Thom Yorke.

Latest find in the local used bin:

Piano works by Robert Schumann (Kempff) -- 4CDs for something like US$6.5. Such price is somewhat unusual in Hong Kong, where used classical CDs (and also CDs of traditional Chinese music) normally fetch 60% or more of the new price -- and hence I tend to buy classical/Chinese trad during record store sales, where I can sometimes get 60-70% off.

On the other hand, stuff that the locals don't care (or don't know about) are often sold at very low prices -- Scots-Irish, western folk, and the rare electroambient CDs fall into that category. Good for me. I just got a Gordon Lightfoot retrospective for a little more than US$1 (nice songwriting, but unfortunately very bad sound).

The stores lower their prices even more if a certain CD doesn't sell after a few weeks. I visit the used-CD store every week, keep a mental note on stuff that interests me -- and wait until the price drops to around US$2.5. I'm now having an eye on a few titles of the Crammed Disc "Made to Measure" series...

I know there's a group of street vendors that move around in Manhattan, closing down a block (with a permit) and sell various trinkets, clothing and used cds. Many of these used cds are still sealed or promo's, i used to catch these vendors at a lot on broadway in SoHo, but now that has become a parking lot

I happened to run into the vendors on west 4th a while back and picked up some cds, prices usually ranging from $5-$10. Wish i could find out where they are all the time so i can hit up the cd vendor since he carries a lot of great stuff. Bummer.
