When i was here last everyone was saying that the 4g imod by redwine? was the best sounding portable device, obviously this needed an amp too, which i have.

Is this still the case? Also what G ipod are we up to now and hows the SQ on them?

I want to get a portable system, so i think ill get some etymotic e4cs ?? i cant remember ey but the red and blue ones in the s version. and was wondering if i needed my amp which is a PINT, or for iems my amp would be useless?

i currently have a cd player which is quite *****, are there any good cd players around or something more portable that plays lossless like the ipod.

cheers fellas. JJZ

well from what i personally believe, that still stands, i purposely went out and bought a brand new 4G photo last month, and sent it straight to vinnie for imod. BUT i am only interested in the SQ not video or other features that later generations afford.

there is very close debate and opinions as to which has it in the sound stakes (suprise suprise) the 4G imod or the later gen imods, like always, some are in the 4G camp some in the later gen camp. forgetting sound for one moment, i prefer the fact that with the 4G i can use a simple non proprietary mini to mini as opposed to the bulkier ALO dock cables and variations. also i can still make use of add-ons what would require use of the dock port, maybe like the battery pack i plan to get.

i think i am right in saying we are upto 5g updated aka 5.5g in ipods, somebody pls correct me if i am wrong.

not sure about the PINT amp you mention, i feel thirsty now ! - but unless it is unusually different from most other amps, should be ok to drive IEMs and cans.

and BTW WB.

Yes, Vinnie's iMod is still number one in regards to pure SQ in a portable DAP. If you are starting from scratch I recommend you devise a list of what is most important (besides SQ) to help you decide whether to get a 4g or 5+g iMod. The newer generation has a number of advantages: better battery runtime, thinner shell, gapless proprietary playback, video playback, greater choice of accessories. The 4g's advantage: the mod, in conjunction with having to purchase at least an ALO mini dock, is over $100 cheaper. 4g iPods are cheaper. Though thicker shell, since you use the headphone out it is less bulky when you take ICs into consideration.

In other words, say cost is a big concern, then I would recommend getting the 4g. You won't be missing out on the SQ front.

NOTE: As the previous poster mentioned, there is certainly opinion in regards to the 4g vs 5+g iMod SQ and which sounds better. I'm still waiting on my 5.5 iMod so I can't offer my opinion on this but there seems to be enough debate that my take is the SQ is comparable.

As for portable amps - I would say the current reigning SQ champ is Meier's Corda Move. Especially when you take cost into consideration. There are many fine amps out there though so do some digging. A very good place to start is Skylab's thread where he continually builds a comparison of many (he's up to 24) portable amps.

nice comparo, thats very interesting to me, the kind of mini review i can actually understand. well all i can say is i think that setup you have is my number 1 all time rig for neatness and aesthetics, and i have a very keen, sharp and demanding eye for such things. i LOVE the matte, sandpaper finish.

if you ever sell her, perish the thought, i would certainly be one of many who would be VERY interested

Thanks. Unfortunately she's not for sale, ever. BTW she's been upgraded to 5.5G 80GB specs, but the same soul. Apparently with lossless, space is a BIG deal.
