Well i caught upgraditis and im looking to upgrade my source. I currently use an ipod nano 3g 8gb and a ipod 4g 20gb and i am a mac user. I have an extensive music collection mainly ripped in FLAC, MP3 and AAC. Now im looking for a new source with quite a bit of memory. it will be hooked up to my PFE's with no amp and will play music of all types. Any suggestions? thanks

Fixed.

What's the size of the music collection you want to carry around? That will determine whether you can go for one of the swanky portable media players that usually max out at 32GB, or grab a more standard flash player that often has an expandable SD slot usually maxing out at 48/64GB or whether you're left with going for a hard drive player which maxes out at 120/160GB.

Well then you've basically got a choice between hard drive players (iPod/Zunes, of which a rockboxed iPod 5.5G sounds awesome I might add) or high capacity (up to 32GB internal) flash players with additional potential for expandable memory (Cowon D2+, Sansa Fuze, Creative Zen). There's also a couple of flash players that max out at 32GB but have no expandability, which often have much nicer screens and better functionality like web browsing (such as the forthcoming Sony Walkman X1000, Samsung P3, Cowon S9).

The choice out of all those would depend on the kind of sound preferences you have. Plus there are probably more than a couple I've missed out, but those are the ones that come to mind.

unamped when i want to travel light but still want a ton of files. i usually only amp when i am listening to music, and only with my iriver h120 most of the time.

Another option would be a used 5G from eBay of the 30GB variety.

I personally like the 30 more than the bigger capacity ones. The thinness is just so nice in the hands. Plus you can throw in a CF adapter and 32GB CF card for around $100. So a used 30 for $50 - $100 (depending on whether you buy a working or broken one) and $100 for 32GB CF conversion and you have a nice 32GB flash player that's compatible with your Mac for $150 - $200, and also later upgradable to higher capacity CF cards or a hard drive if you outgrow the 32GB.

You single platter 80GB drive if you don't want to change out the back plate and keep the thin profile of the 30GB model. If you just get any 80GB drive that's for a 5th generation iPod, you'll probably end up with the larger ones for actual 80GB models and you'll have to change out the back plate.
