As of now, I own a DT 770 32 Ohm with a Fiio BTR3 for portable and plug in use. I love the DT 770s, and I know they are some of the top cans in the price range. I was hoping to add another set to my collection to complement the signature the 770s offer. My budget is tight, but I saw the 599 on sale. I was wondering if they would be able to offer a more balanced presentation compared to my 770s. I'd like a similar amount of detail but wouldn't mind some bass recession if there was an increase in mid presence and clarity. I love the Sennheiser treble as well and I wouldn't want too big of a drop-off from them. Also, they'd strictly be for use at home. I know it's unreasonable to expect a full step upgrade from the 770s given the pricepoint of the 599s but I'm hoping they'll be a sidegrade at least that can give me a completely different musical signature without sacrificing the great imaging, clarity, or detail provided by the Beyers. Headphones are at a premium around me thanks to crazy import prices, and I can snag the Sennheiser HD 599 for 115 Euros (~$140) atm.

I have some questions about the HD 599

That's a great price!!!
I own both the DT-880 (600 ohm) and the HD599.
They are definitely complementary headphones, each with a distinctive presentation and sound signature.
599 is warmer with more of a U-shaped "prosumer" tuning. To my ear, detail retrieval is somewhat less than the 880, but they make up for it with an easygoing character and all-day comfort.

Thanks for the input! But would you say that they are night and day different? To your ears, of course

Lol. I just now realized this is a resurrection of a 2.5-year-old thread ...
But FWIW, I'd say they are more different than alike.

Oh man... I didn't noticed that!

So they really complement well and would be 2 nice headphone to have, would you say that?
If you're referring to the Beyerdynamic DT-770, I've never listened to them and can't comment. If you're referring to the DT-880/600, I am very fond of these headphones, especially for the price. I would recommend them with just one caveat: it takes a sturdy amp to drive 600 ohms properly.
Both the HD599 and the DT-880 seem to go on sale pretty regularly - I got mine for CAD$180 and CAD$130 respectively - and at those prices it's easy to say yes to both.
