Hey,

i used to have an audio-technica headphone with 32 but then i said its time to upgrade so i got the DT990 250 and i knew at that time i needed more than my Soundcard, but i asked a friend if i needed the full stack of Schiit (Magni & Modi) which i told i didn't, the problem is i was googling if needed any extra cables or things, everyone was using the full stack none used Magni 2 solo which i was told it would be fine, so guys with this:

DT990 Pre 250ohms
Soundblaster Z
Magni 2

Do i need Modi 2 DAC or not? and if not is it going to be
Soundblaster Z-> Optical cable -> Magni 2 -> DT990? thank you <3

edit: found out that Magni 2 has no optical ports, hmm what to do xD?

It's supposed to be
SBZ optical port >optical> Modi2 Uber >RCA> Magni2 >headphone cable> DT990

SBZ FL/FR speaker output jack (green on some soundcards/motherboards) >3.5mm to RCA> Magni2 >headphone cable> DT990

Double check if you use Virtual Surround from the soundcard's DSP though - the soundcard might not enable it to go out of the FR/FL line output jack.

The DT990 is 250ohms so the output impedance on soundcards isn't a problem.

Power might not necessarily be a problem either wiht 96dB/1mW sensitivity. If it's not loud enough, set the SBZ to high gain - you just need to get past the Marketingelese on it. My Xonar U3 calls high gain "Extreme Mode."

While a headphone amp might give you more power before you hit distortion (or clipping), as long as it gets loud you'd barely notice the difference for gaming. It might be audible for music, but if you're mostly gaming on it, you won't notice how that explosion will sound better with an ultra low THD+N amplifier. You might not even notice the difference for music either.

at first thank you for the quick replay !
what if this, "OEM SBZ > Optical > FiiO D03K (this becomes the DAC) > RCA> O2/Magni Amp (very low impedance) > HE-400" ( i have DT990) (quoted from other forum by a person called "SaLX")

for the moment i will get that DAC FiiO D3 but then i may get modi, will it be any near good?

Maybe it will work alright, but if you think about the total expenses, using the D03K now and then getting the Modi2 Uber will cost you more in the long run. You'll pay for the D03K plus maybe shipping now. Then you'll buy the Modi2 Uber and pay shipping. If you bought the Magni2 and Modi2 Uber you get both in one box paying shipping only once.

Why not just use the soundcard first? You haven't even purchased the headphone to see what it sounds like with the soundcard. And the SBZ's only real shortcoming is the high output impedance anyway, which isn't a concern for a 250ohm headphone.

i already have the DT990 like a month ago i bought it i already ordered the Magni 2 (not the uber) that was 2 days ago now i ordered the D03k with all the cables i need for now, then i may get the Modi 2 ( also not the uber). so am i doing it right?

If youre not interested in driving powered speakers then you dont need the Uber version.
A DAC will likely be a good improvement in SQ.
A DT990+Schiit Magni= an incredibly bright sound. You must really be into treble.

If you get the non-Uber Modi2 you will not have SPDIF inputs, and if you don't, you can't use the soundcard's DSP.
