I was having a long day at work essentially doing nothing but data entering for six hours, and to make things worse, I come home to realize something is terribly wrong:

My speakers were missing.

I definitely think they were stolen. My roomate was the last one to touch the door, and he may have forgotten to lock it or what not. When I came home, after all, my door was open and the chain lock was hanging from the LOCK and not the DOOR.

The guy, luckily, didn't take much else from us. Though people a few appartments down the hall from us also reported that they had a laptop computer stolen. I'm so pissed! Now all my money will have to go into speakers, when I was going to do a major upgrade to my turntable.

I suppose I should just be happy that I have food, money, the rest of my audio gear, and my health

But ... honestly.. this made me mad!

It was a perfect way to top off getting rejected for a 2nd date and a pretty bad day at work.

Sorry to hear that. Nothing quite like losing something you really like in that fashion.

Ouch. Worst I ever had was a Discman and Headphones (crappy ones, though) stolen at camp. Speakers would be a real blow.

On a side note, don't you mean Thiefs/Thieves?

They were Ohm Model E speakers ... they were good ... but old -- so it could have been much worse, I suppose. ARGH! They were my main speakers, though...

I refuse to listen to anything else ... headphones will be my poison for a while now.

Do you have renter's insurance? I have $40,000 worth or protection for like $20 a month although my audio equipment and a few other things are on seperate riders. Renter's insurance is essential--it even covers accidents. Like if you chop your finger off cooking dinner at my place it won't cost you a dime. Also, even if I were to damage something by stupidity--ie, drop my TV while moving or something like that, it's still 100% covered.

The burglar actually carried a pr of speakers out?
sorry about it, I know you feel violated.
had it happen a few times, once the burglars looked through everything, you would think it was a search warrant performed. (they were looking for cash)
I remember when I was living in my first apt by myself and I always ask myself did I lock the door. I had a friend check for me while I was at work. of course, it was always locked but sometimes you can't recall.
In the end, it's just stuff and one get's over it. Now, I have a small safe bolted to a large cabinet for my stuff that has high street value.
Did anyone actually put a claim in on renter's insurance? Was it handled the way you wanted it?

Sounds like amateur hour to me. I'd think a pro would look for cash, jewelry, credit cards, checkbooks, laptops, maybe a DVD player, etc. Carrying out speakers runs you a pretty high risk of getting caught and unless you're an audiophile thief, how do you know you're taking anything of value?

Sorry to hear what had happened to you, that totally blows. I too would go ballistic if had a pair of speakers stolen from me. Some people are so low in this world that they can't respect other people's property and violate them.

I was at the What the Hack conference in the Netherlands this past weekend. One of the talks was by a friend of mine by the name of Barry Wels (http://www.toool.nl/index-eng.php), on something called the "bump key":
http://www.toool.nl/bumping.pdf

This is a very serious and major security problem, allowing most locks and *especially* many high-security locks to be opened within seconds. Fortunately it has not caught on in the US (yet). I would highly recommend you read the article if you're at all concerned about physical security. TOOOL has published a list of bump-proof locks here:
http://www.toool.nl/sloten.pdf

Note that not all of these are available in the US. If you can't find any locally, I know a collector and sometimes dealer of locks that may be able to help you out.

That sucks, dude.

If they were only speakers, then it might have been one of your neighbors. And as much as I hate to say it (since I don't know the guy), but...might it be your flatmate?

Ohms are single-driver, aren't they? You may consider making your next pair. Get a pair of Fostex from eifl; an enclosure from PNF Audio -- you're 90% done already!

that sucks!!

Might want to re-program your garage door opener... and check to make sure they didnt take any extra remote openers you may have had laying around.

that bites... My dad has ohm Walsh speakers, model 8 I believe. Theyre big garbage can sized things on casters.
