I've tried lots of headphones over the years. My favorites are the Sennheiser HD600, the Sennheiser HD650, and the AKG K701.

My problem is that I hate the Sennheiser HD600, the Sennheiser HD650, and the AKG K701.

When listening to any one of these, I miss something that I like about one of the other two. Head-Fier daltonlanny just said something to me that was close to this sentiment, so I suspect a lot of us feel this way, although perhaps in different words.

I'd like to settle on one headphone. Help. Any advice?

After having had many headphone amps, I've settled on the PS Audio GCHA. My source is an Arcam FMJ CD33. I listen to all kinds of music, except, perhaps, country & western.

If anyone suggests two headphones, I swear I'll have a stroke.

If anyone suggests a headphone other than one of the three above, STROKE.

If anyone says that I need a tube amp, hehhehheh, STROKE, plus I come find you and slash your tires.

I guess what I'm asking is, what is your gut reaction to the question, "Which will cause the least regret over the long term (given my associated gear and music), the HD600, the HD650, or the K701?"

My goal is to retire to the Music forum or perhaps the Lounge, and talk about crabgrass after this.............

K701.

its much more interesting as a reference headphone, but i would actually prefer the DT880 over both.

No particular order:

Fully modded AKG K340 + Tubes

AKG K1000 + TrendsAudio TA10.1

Grado RS2 + Tubes

Grado GS1000 ( You can try with your GCHA ), but I would say TUBES

Good luck

I've had all three 650->701->600->650. As you can see, I'm back to owning the 650's. When I sold them off, I realized that I was missing their more romantic sound. I also think they have the highest potential to go 'all the way' as a high-end phone.

Stick with one only for an extended period and pack the others away. I stuck with the 650.

Your ears seems to adjust and then if you listen to the other headphones later, the differences are so blatant that they are not always as positive as you first thought they were.

I found the 650 too recessed at first. Went to DT880. Eventually decided it was too thin for me. Back to 650 - lovely bass weight. Stuck with the 650 (eventually) and no longer notice any shut in feeling.

Either they burned in or my ears did. I now love the warmth of my Senns.

I meant to mention that I kind of expect the results here to turn out like a poll, which means the 650 nicely beats out the 701,

BUT - - -

I'm gonna to grade on a curve, and give extra credit for carefully reasoned suggestions!

your headphone amp is one of the best from the reviews by other head-fiers.

oh crap. sorry im not very good at reading at 2 in the morning. God bless denon C700s.

but errm since youve had all three, why not go grado?

a pair of SR225s will keep you smiling for a while... and then the pads wear out, and get em replaced, and youll continue smiling.

they cant be matched for detail or tight bass, and thats saying a lot when ive heard DT880's (earlier version)

Yes, the GCHA stays.

Just off the top of my head, I've had the Melos SHA-1, a Creek 11, a Musical Fidelity x-can v2, a Creek integrated headphone jack, a NAD jack, a Lehmann Black Cube Linear, a WooAudio 3, a Naim Headline 2, plus whatever came with my Koss and Stax 3030 electrostats, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

The Naim was good.

But the PS Audio GCHA stays!

My HD-650 arrived today. I love them, and that's just with my (dying) LDII+, when my Graham Slee Solo arrives I've got a feeling I'm going to be very, very happy!

Sorry K-501 and MS-1, you just got whupped. So yeah, go with HD-650!

You will be. I have the same setup and it kicks ass.

I'm about to receive a Little Dot II++ soon though.
