So, my wife had a DIY idea as we were trolling home depot for some parts today. She said it jokingly, but she knows better than to joke about headphones with me. I, personally, think it was divine inspiration.

Without further ado, I give you ... The SR 990!

Sound is about what you would imagine -- between a Grado and a Beyer. The louvered rear panel serves to firm up the bass somewhat, but I definitely lose some sparkle. It'll take some tweaking before it's really an improvement.

Just to see if I could do it. What's the point of any DIY other than for its own sake? A precious few make money off of it, but by and large it's for fun.

Well, the Beyer 990 has louvered grilles in the rear, so I rebuilt my 125's to see how they changed the sound. They add a lot of bass weight. Really, they're not add ones, but rather a complete modification.

No, actually they're aluminum "midget louvers" I found for $1 at Home Depot. Same principle, though. They were exactly the same diameter as the Grado drivers, so I couldn't resist.

What did you use for the black part? Looks like spray can cap.

spray paint them black and try them on the grados.. will look nicer imo
