This has been about a year in the making, but I finally pulled the trigger on the Audio Technica ATH-AD2000. I still need to get my SA5000's recabled, but regardless I want these cans so I said what the heck. Ordered minutes ago from Price Japan for $529. (shipping/paypal fees included) I probably won't see them until the end of next week, but I'm sooo excited!

I gotta get back to finishing my cable review, I just wanted to share.

Let me know how well they do with music with controlled-but-deep bass presence (if you need a sample track I'll be happy to email you one).

Edit: That is, by way of comparison to the A900.

Also, congrats on your purchase - I'm eyeing them myself pretty heavily, but I just can't justify the cash yet.

Yet.

Yeah I couldn't justify the price either until I found out about Price Japan. The Audiocubes price for these things is just insane. I'd love to support them if it was a little over, but its like $200 more expensive there.

For a little over $500, the price is somewhat reasonable and only a little more expensive than the SA5000 and K701. I have a feeling I'll prefer it to both of those cans, but we'll see.

I think you might be suprised on how fast your package arrives, when I got my W5000 from Price Japan they arrived five days after I paid for them. I'd love to hear more reviews of the AD2000, I'd like to add an open headphone to my collection by the time summer rolls around and they're very high on my list.

you'll love em, I'm just putting scubasteve's AD2000 through the paces and it is by far my favorite headphone now. It is the most speakerlike headphone I had the pleasure to enjoy.
My HD650 haven't looked this lonely in a while

How well do they do bass, by comparison to the HD650 (my current favorite headphone)?

the bass quality on the ad2000 is simply stunning. I have not extensively tested the bass on both models comparatively. but from memory it seems that the hd650 has more bass quantity whereas the ad2000 has an outstanding bass quality that has very nice impact. overall it seems the ad2000's bass fits better into its overall spectrum than the hd650's often slightly exagerated bass.

the only slight quirk with the ad2000 is its handling of male voices. I can't quite put my finger on it yet. I have only been enjoying them for 3 days now and that could just be my imagination.

I've had three big shipments from PriceJapan, and all of them have arrived within 2-3 days of ordering. So you can expect your AD2000s at your doorstep on Saturday

Thank you for this noble deed. Comparisons between the SA5000 and AD2000 are far too rare and I look forward to your impressions! Now if someone lent you a Qualia...

Direct A/B comparisons between the two won't happen for a while. My SA5000's have a defective cable and need recabling.

The AD2000 is more speaker-like than the HD650? How do the two compare?

the airyness in the ad2000 just adds the feel of having a speaker set. I sometimes had to pull off the phones to make sure my speakers weren't running at the same time, because the ATs sounded so spacious and airy.
The ad2000 just seems to have a more exciting presentation than the HD650. It's a little more forward and has a nice bass, but strangely the Senns have a bit more detail. I think that is something a cable replacement might be able to change though - so the HD650 could pull up even in terms of forwardness.
I always fall asleep listening to the Senns, but I cannot do so with the AD2000s.

I also liked the comfort of the ATs even though after a while they would push the edge of my ears in. Now I really want to hear a W5000 or L3000.
