Hey Head-fi,

Well finally after researching left and right, reading every possible thread on multiple headphones (RP-21, K701, D2000, SR225, SR325i, HD650, E500,
DT770, DT990) I finally decided to get the Denon D2000's.

My main concern was finding a headphone that would excel in classic rock and still have bass that would not overpower the mids, and still have detail.

So just a few minutes ago I made the purchase at Audio Cubes and now I will weight patiently untill they arrive here in New England.

So the main three questions:

1) Did I make the right decision?

2) What will I benefit from the D2000s

3) What should I look out for and be careful while using the D2000s

I would like to thank to all of the members who shared thier insight and helped me through mind decision even if it was not directly.

Thank you all for making this forum such a good reasource to audio shop intellectually (Well the intellegent part flys out the window once urges and emotions kick in

)

Thanks again,

Izzy

Well, based on my ownership of the Denon AH-D5000 and the fact that I sold every one of my other headphones, I'd say you made a great decision. I went with the wood cups because I like a more natural sound, and the resonance of the wood provides that. But the D2000 are supposed to be basically the same -- only difference is the wood cups and the cable. For the price you paid, I don't think you can find a more enjoyable headphone, and it's very comfortable.

Now get an amp. The audio output of the iPod's headphone out doesn't do them justice at all. And the iPod Classic's SQ is much cleaner and more spatial. You won't realize the true potential of the D2000 until you get an amp and a good line out dock cable, and a better source.

Boy, Head-Fi really sucks your wallet dry, doesn't it?

You will know if you made the right decision once you try them out.

A lot of people are happy with their D2000s, but, as you know, sound is wonderfully subjective. They will certainly be a step up from your current set up, but if it ends up that they aren't for you, there are a lot of people on this site who will be happy to take them off your hands for a good price, which will help fund your next pair.

I was lucky enough to be able to try a lot of different cans before I settled on the HD600s as my mains. I will probably always keep these around while other cans will continue to come and go.

I would vote for the contrary, the Denon to me sounded as good with cheap setup than with sophisticated ones. To me they are the best head-phones for the poor man build-up. One of their main ability to me! You should be fine with your setup. Sure an home rig might sound better but ipod's out was fine to me.

I've been looking for the AKG K2000, but they said that they sold the last unit to "Fitz". Even I did not get the phones, I still believe that I made the right decision...

Do you ever post anything other than AKG fanboyism?

Come on man, it's a little ridiculous, even if it is all in jest.

I can say that because I know how ridiculous I sounded when I was new to the hobby and was a UE fanboy.

But you're not new to the hobby, so try to give it a rest.

It is the only thing I post if it is the only thing you want to remember me posting. I think this is called selective memory. But if you do not like my posts, then nobody is forcing you to read them. Just because I do not support your headphones does not make my opinion ridiculous.

Well I'm glad that the first people conured my decision and as for Fitz I'm sure I'll see the AKG light some day.

Now I will get an amp eventually, probably in a month from now when funds are saved up. but will I be entirely disapointed w/o an amp while I wait to save up for the Hornet and the Cryo Dock?

I use my D2000's (balanced) with my Ray Samuels B-52. I would say they sounded good single ended with the stock cable but awesome with silver effected replacement cables once burned in. The fact that they scale well with the B-52 is an indicator of excellence. Enjoy! Know that once you learn the D-2000 sound signature and decide on it's strengths and weaknesses you can always tweak them and get many hours of fun as a result. I love them with Jazz, Rock, Ambient and Some classical.

Izzy: I think you made a very fine choices for your criteria, if anything, for the money they are great, and work very well without dumping much money into (even though many will try hard to get you to do so). Enjoy, for classic rock Denons are very interesting headphones.

1. You are not understanding the Fitz act. If you read his older posts, you might get a slightly clue as to what he is doing...well that and you have not owned a vintage AKG, have you =] (Sextetts and good K340s are something else...)
2. You are wildly supporting Denons now...how many people heard you recommend anything else since you got them?

Well I can't wait untill they get here apparently it takes 1-3 days to ship and then 4-7 to get over here to New England. For the time being I will be running them only out of my computer until my Hornet can be purchased because I have a feeling that my Ipod wont be able to run them better than my computer since my laptop has a powr strip.

The D2000s are great headphones so IMHO you made a very good choice. And further down the road, when you want to get more detail out of them and improve their dynamic range even more, you can look into a recable. I sometimes miss my recabled D2000 that I sold. Oh well...no sense living in the past.
