I hate live music too and besides it is a waste of money to see a band live. Just build a home theatre or car audio system that reaches the same decibles and you will feel like your at a concert. That is what I did.

The proper way to see a show, in my opinion, is at an extremely small club or bar and at the very front of the stage. The problem with that however, is that most of the bands/groups don't play that small of venues and even then you can't get to the front of the stage unless you camp out. All other types of shows, at big arenas with lots of people, just aren't fun and it's not intimate the way it should be. So yeah, shows can be either really great or really crappy. That's the way it works for me, can't say for others.
 
So don't knock seeing live shows people. I've seen plenty in the same vein that people are complaining about in this thread. On the other hand, I've seen shows that I rank as the pinnacle of my musical experience.

something else. See a good band then mate. Live sound is unparralled. Sunn0)) changes people live. IF you hear a band live and they stink, stop listening to their music altogether. I have yet to see a band live that I haven't adored. That's because maybe the music I enjoy takes actual talent to make...who knows.

Room acoustics are often poor. Having giant subs to rock a building is nice though. The music is almost never as good as their recordings either.
 
 
With that said, I love going to live shows for the experience and fun. Id rather go to a concert than a club/bar.

Live shows are 85 percent experience/merch 10% sound and 5% just getting out. At least for me

I kind of agree with the op, but sometimes its more about the energy and excitement of seeing songs you love live, rather than the poor sound quality. I went to a festival last weekend, and Foals played the main stage in high crosswinds and their sound was pretty bad, but everyone was still getting really into it and enjoying it. I haven't really seen a band with such horrible sound that it made me not want to see live music again though.
 
P.S. I wish I could've seen Massive Attack for $48 bucks...I spent $115 on tickets to see them at the Sydney Opera House, but god that was a great show.

Their performance wasn't bad at all. I actually really enjoyed it. But the sound system was just horrific.
 
Like I said earlier, it was nearly impossible to make out what the vocalists were saying.. even between songs when it was quiet, and it was hard to make out distinct bass notes. It all sounded kind of jumbled together.
 
If any of you are Massive Attack fans, they played the song "Risingson". In the beginning where it's just bass, It was difficult to hear what he was playing. Then when the drums came in I said, "OH! It's Risingson". I'm all for going to a concert for the experience, but come on, I couldn't even make out songs. It was that bad.

Over the years I'd got used to the idea that live rock concerts often wouldn't sound that great, but that changed a few years ago when I saw The Who. The volume was too loud (as you'd expect!), but there was no distortion at all and it sounded fantastic. I assumed that they had simply invested in better gear and technicians than bands I'd seen previously. Similar experience with Steely Dan, except not even too loud.

If you want to see an amazing live show with killer audio quality you should see the band Phish.  Great band and the people running the board actually have a clue!  Plus they sell each show online (soundboard quality).  Fantastic.  Check them out, they're on tour as we speak.

I greatly prefer live music.  IMO music isn't supposed to sound perfect.  It's supposed to be musicians making music happen together, in one "take" for people, who are there seeing that happen.  You get to hear the musicians talk, tell embarrassing stories and stupid jokes, and see them sweat, working there asses off to put on a great show.  I'm sorry but sound quality takes a back seat to that experience any day.
 
A bad show is a bad show. That happens.

I agree, I love seeing live shows, and listening to tracks live that I don't usually listen to make me appreciate it more. Live shows give more nostalgia, and more of a drive to listen to their music. I'm going to see MONO for like 4th time in November, and they never disappoint.

I went to the Veld Music Festival in Toronto last weekend and the sound was pretty awful, especially on the main stage. Doesn't surprise me though, a lot of people seemed to be there for "the sick  drops". The second day I was in the tent where there was more Trance playing, it had better sound. Overall it was more enjoyable as an experience than just hearing live music.
Looking forward to seeing Rush next month.

Go to a classical concert. The sound will be phenominal, the musicians terrifically talented and the guy behind you won't puke all over his seat in the middle of the show.
