If you're hell bent on torturing yourself you might want to visit your nearest sports supplier or chemist. You can find tips that are designed to help you sleep or prevent water from entering your ears, these will fit into your ears easier and provide a bit of isolation aswell if they are designed to help you sleep, the dBa rating is usually it's written on the packaging. Just make a hole through them and you have better foamies, but the sound still sucks.
Change the tips to an earplug that fits you better. I like Howard Leight MAX plugs. If you take a paperclip and heat it up in a lighter, you can shove it through the middle real quick and make a new tip. Another earplug that I've had good luck with is the Pura-fit plugs. With them you squish them under water and let them fill up with water. Then freeze them, use a small drill bit to put a hole right through the middle. I've also seen good results using reusable silicon ear plugs. I've heard you can balance the sound quite a bit by stuffing some radio snatch foam in the tube of the earphone. I got an all out mod called the hear-u-go. The earphone itself is placed inside a small box and plastic tubing is run from the box to real ear plugs. This mod is great for under helmet use but it makes the bass almost overpowering. I use them in unpleasant environments that I wouldn't risk my regular cans in.
