Hello, I'm new to this forum and I stumbled upon it while I was searching for headphones. It started that I was going to get the Bose around ear, no noise canceling is really necessary. Then I got deeper in and discovered the MANY options for headphones. I am looking for something portable enough to take with me and my ipod and has that clear bass and acoustic sound I experienced at the Bose store from their demo. I found the Grado SR80 and the Denon AHD 1000 or 1001. Another option was the Sennheiser HD280Pro from what I have seen. My price range is from 100-150 approximately. If anyone could give their opinion as to which one I should pick please do as this place seems to be an amalgamation of headphone knowledge. Thanks for your time (and of course if you have any other suggestions over these, please do!)

Welcome to Head-Fi, sorry about your wallet. I suppose it depends on what you want as far as durability goes. The SR-80 is a great choice but it leaks allot of sound ( may disturb others around you ) and as far as durability goes probably not the best . I guess it depends on how hard you are on your equipment. The Denon is closed, more durable ( most likely ), good sound from what others have said.

Theres also the AKG-81DJ, closed, durable, $70.00, allot of loyal supporters. If you can stretch the budget to $200 , try the Sennheiser HD-25-1, apparently bulletproof.

If your easy on your gear or plan to be , and sound leakage is not an issue, and you want kick ass sound and are prepared to "baby" your headphones then without a doubt go for the SR-80.

Do your research here, read up on what others have to say. Good luck in your search. Oh almost forgot .... whatever you do stay away from that HD-280.....at all costs, to big for portable use , anemic sound, clamps like a vice, and cracks .
