This might be a fun thread. Post some of the audio related components that you, at one point, thought sounded good.

I'll start with one that I hope will be common:
Sony Streetstyle headphones (*gulp

Ummm... my Boostaroo?

(I still don't think it sounds all that bad with my ol' Koss's

*gets out flame proof suit* Sennheiser HD600s. After several pairs of cans that I have liked and enjoyed a whole lot better, I liten to them now and can't believe I liked them before. They were really good when I hadn't compared them to other cans, but I personally don't like them anymore.

No, I am not trying to start a flame war, just answering the question andrzej asked. Honestly.

Sir, you are mad...

My Boostaroo has been sitting in a drawer since I bought it (I thought snakes had crawled into my head and were hissing at me when I tried it).

Anyway, hmmm... my contribution to this thread would be my first turntable, which was a cheap plastic Sony (forgot the model number) I bought in 1999 for about $120. Sounded awful, totally muddy, colored and veiled by rumble (it did have a strange sort of openness/airyness to the sound though, which was kind of euphonic and appealing). I have some old digital recordings of LP's I made from it, and can't believe I actually used the thing for a couple years.

Why? I'm curious (no flames), as I rather liked the sound of the 600's when I heard them at the Seattle meet and am considering getting a pair in a couple-three months. Could you describe what characteristics you didn't like about them?

Anyway, they sounded quite similar to the 580 to me, but somewhat livelier and probably a little tipped up on top and bottom like my Denon cans (I have to admit I really like that kind of frequency balance a lot).

fewtch,

Splashy highs that really made things like the sax sound bad and don't do cymbals that well either, highly congested soundtage that overlaps instruments pretty badly, and too expensive since they work their best when you spend another $100+ on an aftermarket cable. I did a side by side testing of them using both a Sugden HeadMaster and an RKV with Impedancer when conducting this. They were compared to a pair of Sony CD3000s and verified by the individual who owned the Senn 600s w/ Cardas cable to make sure it wasn't just my preference since I owned the Sonys. He agreed at each point as I would listen to them, then switch over to the Sonys and then point out the defects.

Does this mean they suck or anything? Not at all. They are very good cans that are probably the most popular around in the high-end market. What is does mean is that when you compare them to another set of cans they can be bested for less money when taking the new cable into account.

Thanks Doug... I didn't listen long enough to get a very good idea of their soundstaging (and loud background chatter didn't help), so that's useful to know. Have you heard the HD-580 and have an opinion on those? (pls PM me if you have the time to answer, this is getting too far off-topic now)

hd600s for me too. It isn't that I don't like them anymore. I just think they aren't the king of the hill that a lot of people think they are. I think too many people have a senneheiser hardon.

Sony MDR-G72LP (hope that makes you feel better, andrzej

). I even discussed the qualities of the 72 compared to the 52 some of my friends had with those same people.
