SR71 & Xin SD Amp, Ety ER4Ps (w/P->S Cable), Shure E3s, and Muvo NX 256. That would leave me with my 4G iPod (which I will never sell) and some old Koss Plugs. Selling all this gear would put me in the range of the Sensa 2XS's or UE 5 or 7 Pros (give or take a few bucks from me). Are any of these that good straight out of iPod to throw the rest of this stuff under the bus and get 'em? If minimalism rocks, I could go for a lighter belt...but is the cost too high??

2X-S sounds great directly out of the iPod without an amp, although I can't compare it to SR-71 (don't have it), even compared to my HR-2 it sounds pretty good (takes a pretty good analytical listening session to distinguish and verbalize improvements).

Can't speak for UE, but I bet UE5c is easily driven without an amp as well. I don't know about UE5-Pro or UE7-Pro though... I'd stay away from UE-7 Pro just because the price is already so close to UE-10 Pro... no reason to get it.

The UE-5c can indeed be run quite nicely without an amp. The only difficulty with getting rid of the rest of your gear is that, once you get an IEM, you'll soon begin wondering what improvement an amp might bring to the mix. Given that, I would be very reluctant to get rid of an amp of the quality of the SR-71. You might just end up having to buy it a second time.

..yeah, I sold my Porta Corda II because I needed the Nad C542 badly, and where did it get me? I just re-bought a PCII, that's where it got me! So yeah, try to avoid selling the sr-71 if you possibly can.

From what lindrone said it seems that there won't be much benefit to having the SR-71 with the 2X-S. If the HR-2 doesn't make an easily analyzed and verbalized difference, I doubt the SR-71 would.

Then again, if you start itching for an amp, you might wait for the Supermono to come out and see what people have to say about it. According to Xin it's gonna be one of the best amps out there. And it's about the SR-71's size, if not a bit smaller. And way cheaper ($200 starting config, AFAIK).

Lindrone, your previous posts have pretty much sold me on the Sensas even if my tastes lean toward Ety flavor (which is clearly not your cup of tea). And since you have Ray's HR-2 this discussion is relevant. Thing is, the SR71 makes the Etys superlative. I simply don't need that much bass, a la E5C, et al. Ray's house sound is absolutely PERFECT with my ER4s, especially after the now more than 50 hours of burn-in time. My thing is, how much simpler would my life be if I could just clip my iPod (in Marware case) to the belt, jam in my Sensas and go! If the difference is insignificant, I'd really just like to focus on the MUSIC. Same time, I don't want to leave very much (if anything) on the table. I want it all!! Would sacrifice a smidge for portability.

If you truly will never regret selling the SR-71's.. then go for it.. although I completely understand where Plainsong's coming from, since I've done exactly the same thing myself

Well, not the PC II, but some other amps & headphones.

well, just think...

you won't need any amps cause the sensas sound astonishing without one. and in my opinion, the size of iems and the lack of necessity for extra bulky amps or power units for pristine sound, is a major plus.

and, once you have the sensaphonics you will have zero desire for the e3's or er-4's ever again. that my friend, is a promise.

so is it worth it?

no question.

I have a SD and don't use it with the Sensas. They don't need a amp. Use EAC and LAME APX or better with that kind of phone.

And have fun. I know you will.

Hi VRanswer,

I have a Porta Corda 2 and find there is no need for it out of a DAP (Zen Xtra and Karma)

I do need an amp with eties and so would agree with the previous comments.
Yeah, UE-10 Pros and DAP, fantastic portable set-up. All the IEM's mentioned were designed to be run out of a Sure belt pack which has a very low power output, and hence their incredible efficiency.

Regards

John

PS I'm enjoying my portable set up so much I keep buying CD's. Yesterday went back tracking and got Janis Joplin, Free, Jethro Tull and Byrds.

Not to start another discussion on this but, given what you say to be liking... Lindrone, won't he be better off with UE-10? Considering the sound signature he appears to prefer, I mean.

Indeed, that's why I'm waiting to see what Iamdone has to say - coming from the Ety persuasion. Wouldn't have quite enough money for UE 10s.

I was asking Lindrone's opinion because he's the only one to have listened to both canalphones. Now, he prefers 2X-S but has stated repeatedly that for people with different tastes in sound signature, UE-10 could be a better choice.
Iamdone no doubt would prefer Sensas to Etys, but he was actually looking for the HD-650 sound signature (it was him, right?).
