Absolutely, not only the responsibility but the privilege as well. Remember that driving is not something to be taken lightly. You will have a control of a 2 ton weapon, it's serious stuff. Enjoy the experience and learn the rules of safety. When you get your permit, practice as much as you possibly can. Always be aware of the "other guy." Driving requires that you look everywhere, not just at the road ahead of you. When you eventually get your license, try your damndest to avoid showing off for the babes.

Sincerely,

The dad who's son just got his license.

Just remember the No.1 rule:

All drivers are idiots.

If you remember that, and think ahead you will be A-OK. Also, don't listen to your friends. I cop ****loads for driving "slow" and "like a Grandpa" when I'm doing the limit. It is so tempting to give in and rev up along straight roads, but you'll probably wind up around a tree. It's just not worth it. I've found that by driving smart, and not fast, I still get ahead of the fast and aggressive drivers in the traffic. Don't be afraid to wait either - if in doubt, DON'T.

Most of all though, enjoy the freedom.

BTW, what are the required steps to obtain a driver's lisence in the 'States?
