It toggles between headphone and either amp or dac depending on which one you had selected last . It’s automatic when it senses a headphone plugged in .Prety instantaneous with the exception of the normal boot process between modes but you get to watch the pretty lights while u wait so there’s that.

So I would use dac mode with an external amp driving speakers? What is amp mode? Is that when you use the TT2 to directly drive speakers without an external amp?

It acts as a digital preamp with volume control. That mode can also drive sensitive speakers directly.

If you can avoid another preamp altogether and go direct to a power amp or powered speakers, you are better off (assuming you want max transparency)

The tt2 can fit into any part of the chain or replace it entirely.

The only difference between dac mode and amp mode is that dac mode is fixed line-level output, iirc. There is no difference in hardware that the signal touches.

Questions for TT2 balanced out. I am contemplating using TT2 and the iFi iESL which is an energizer for Stax headphones.

1) iESL recommends minimum 10V at 64 ohm input. Does TT2 balanced output meet or exceed that?
2) The iESL input plug is a 4 pin XLR so I assumed a dual 3 pin to 4 pin XLR adapter would work?

Any one using a tt Toby with tt2 to drive speakers. Debating doing that or picking up a LFD LE6. Tt2 says amp mode can be used if amp can take a 2.5V signal.

The black just completely destroys the silver units in the looks department.

I like them both actually but prefer black. With the glowing balls, it just looks so cool. It also tends to disappear better in to your decor when the lights in the room are on.

Tristan, without the HMS in the chain, what do you think about the TT2 compared to your once owned TT1 in terms of sound?

I am planning on moving from my leaner sounding H2 to a fuller sounding DAC. TT1 can be had for $2k. But I feel TT2 is future proof and has better features. I'd appreciate your input.
