My M Scaler cannot handle 24bit 192kHz via optical input. It keeps dropping the signal and mostly no music comes out, sometimes it plays a second or two, pretty distorted. Tried both optical input ports, tried different cables. However, if I connect the very same optical cable to the TT2 it works perfectly as it should. (192kHz via USB to HMS works also perfectly.)

According to the Manual optical input should work up to 192kHz: https://chordelectronics.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/M-Scaler-User-Manual.pdf#page=23

I don't have many 192kHz tracks (that's why I only found it out now) and I can probably still download my 192 purchases in lower quality too but this pretty disappointing.

Can someone else here test whether it works for you? Do I need to send the M Scaler to the service again?

i can confirm that with my HMS, 24/192 works very reliably with some toslink cables, and not at all with others. I haven’t had an in between

with ~1m toslink cables, both generic Amazon and Lifatec ($$) work great. When I tried a ~4m Lifatec it did not work.

i did not do a full eval to see shorter cables are better. Just sharing my N=3 experiences.

Thanks. So it looks like I will have to buy additional Toslink cables until one finally works at 192. :unamused:

It's curious though why the TT2 works with the very same cable. It's a device designed and manufactured at the same time by the same company as the M Scaler. Why it it handling the same cable so differently?

Kabel direkt on amazon.co.uk, I have 4 or 5 of their optical cables and they all do 24/192khz, and they are cheap.

I had an Audioquest cinammon toslink that didn’t work but the cheapo with the H2 worked great. Go figure.

Kable direkt cable didn't work at 24/192 with my Qutest.

It might be your source - also make sure it snaps in. It's possible you got a dud.

All my Kable direkt do 192/24 to Dave, which is notoriously picky, even a 10ft one.

Hi, i had with Mojo Sysconcept cable! Both of them, and worked like a charm at 24/192. Try it. For exampe AQ cinnamon optical dont even specify that they can work at 24/192.

While listening to dsd files through HMS and tt2 with full upsampling, dsd files sound a bit dynamically restrained specially the microdynamics which seems a bit stunted. Is it due to inherent timing problem of dsd or 'elaborate treatment' by HMS ?

I think it is an inherent problem with DSD imho. It always sounded soft and lacked dynamics compared to PCM with my last DAC too, before I got the Dave and Blu2. I never listen to DSD now
