How to convince parents to let me buy headphones??

They don't sound like music lovers, so instead of using stuff like "good coffee" as a weapon, use it as a comparison. People splurge on good caffeine/liquor because you can get typically get pretty far up the cost/benefit curve without breaking the bank.

Absolutely was gonna say that. Find something like coffee where they spend more to get better and compare. My favorite comparison is hamburgers (and I'm kinda hungry) compare the cheap headphones they would let you get to a McDonald's hamburger. McDonald's burgers will fill your stomach, but aren't nearly as good as anything else you could get. Then say that the headphones you want are more like a burger from, oh say outback. It is more expensive, but better in every single way. That may give them a better understanding of how you feel.
Hamburgers are good because some people may like cheap coffee, but I don't know a soul who'd rather have a burger from McDonald's than outback.

I stand corrected. Some people will always pick the cheaper option I suppose.

It wasn't about price: the "better" burgers were too thick to eat easily, he would complain

Hi, its very difficult to convince someone that opposes ones few without bargaining from  a position of strenght. So... the fact is that you are working, saving and have bought a car through hard work and getting off your ass to make it happen. Ok, maybe not say it in that tone but you get my point. Sell yourself first in what you have accomplished in such a short time and music is your hobby and passion. Parents love their children to have a hobby and passion. Just my cent worth. Hope all works out.

As a young'n I loved music, and listened constantly to my pioneer stereo.
Mum and dad bought ME headphones so they didn't have to listen to my music.
Listen to music that you like, and your parents don't.

Suppose its down to the parents. I mean, my young fellas are on school holidays and are only aged 8 and 10, Alex is listening to my v-modas xs and the other fella has my wife's Moe's and they think this is the norm. In my day.. AHHH grumpy old man rant!!

This is a great idea. Buy some big, cheap, loud speakers. Within a month, your parents will be very happy if you sell them and get headphones :D

Bonus points if it comes with a cheap subwoofer that you can hear across the house. Play some mid bass thumping music (chimes - Hudson Mohawke) and you'll surely get the headphones. But the meat god is a bit underhanded.
*edit* MEATHOD! I meant meathod. NOT meat god.

Actually, even better. You don't need big loud speakers. Just a big loud sub :D

Well, except at my house. My big living room subs would easily drown out anything my teenage son could afford to purchase ;)

Thanks for all the advice guys. I thought the same as most of you (that it's my money and I should be able to spend it), but I also realized that I'm living under their roof and I have to abide by there rules. But ,anyways, I finally convinced them by telling them that I would take really good care of them so they will last me a few years, which in the long run will be cheaper than buying a new pair of cheap earphones every few months. I can't wait to get my first pair of decent headphones!!

I have also been saving my tips, and I have a few hundred dollars in tips in my checking account. I have spent any of them on food or useless crap I will never use.

Congratulations on already knowing at 15 not to waste money on useless crap.  That and choosing a nice headphone shows you and your ears are wise beyond your years.

A good headphone can last much longer than a few years if treated well.  Enjoy.

Btw, find some good quality versions of songs your parents like, and then have them listen with your headphones.  That can often help non-headphone people understand.  I've had people tell me how great their $1 budget store earbuds sound, and then I've had them try some of my stuff, and they go, "Ooooo..." and then they understand.
