I have a .TS file that I got off my DVR. It plays on my computer, but only because of plugins or something that I downloaded. How can I easily convert the file to mpeg or avi or some form of widely compatible format? Will this be hard on my computer? It's kind of old so I want to make sure it can handle it if it is a high intensity action.

are you on mac or pc? I have mac programs that can do it. If not, look for freeware programs in google that convert dvd to whatever. Downloads.com tends to have a lot for free.

Depends which OS you run.
VisualHub might be worth a try, if you're running Mac OS X.
