How To Build One Of The World's Finest Dynamic Headphones (markl Denon AH-D5000 Mods)

Well, TBH when i hold them in my hand, they are lighter than my AD700's (to me), But upon putting them on, weight is slightly more, not an issue for me at all.

I've now made the full mod excluding Fiberloft in the earcups to my Denon's. Bass has tightened up nicely but highs are way too bright now. One of the main reasons I switched from Grado's to Denon's were their more relaxed highs.

So what should I do to calm down the highs? Rip off some Dynamat and reverse it to "half-way mod" which Mark describes in the end of the guide?

Seba, how many hours of burn in do your D5000 have? As a minimum they need 450-500 hours to settle the top end. BTW, did you also perform the ear pad mod? The ear pads should be thicker in the back to better angle the driver.

Yes I have had stuffed earpads since January but I opened up my Denon's this week for good. Stuffing the earpads was already a big step forward in terms of SQ. I'm not so sure of my D5000's hours but they are at least past 200h.

Ok, see if you can burn them is for another 300 hours and see if the treble settles. Mine (D2000 and D5000) have no harshness nor shrillness in the top end. As a matter of fact they sound very detailed, clear, and enjoyable. Good luck.

Update: sorry my bad, it seems an option that coloured the sound inside the X-Fi control panel was on, now everything sounds perfect <3 no regrets

Seba,
What kind of amp are you using? Sometimes, with budget amps that don't put out a lot of juice, the bass the cans are capable of and the mod is designed to control, can't fully bloom. The appearance of increased highs is a psycho-acoustic effect of controlling the bass boom. I would try taking off the less essential bits of damping, starting with the bits in the aluminum rings of the frame/assembly, see what that does for you.

Mine have got 400 or more hours on them and I don't get the shrillness or treble complaint either.

See my sig for my set. I think Audio-gd C2C pumps out enough juice for Denon's and AQ King Cobra's should be very warm cables.

I will torture my Denon's for the whole week, because we have a small "CanJam" in Finland next weekend and I think I will bring my phones fully modded to that event. I'll make my decisions after that what to do with the phones.

My next cans will be D7000 and immediately modded. Please help me on this aspect:

I hear the D2000 has booming bass.
D5000 has strong denon bass but some boom is lost due to better midrange?
D7000 more soundstage, bass like D5000 but a pump so = to d2000 and still had strong midrange?

My issue is, MY DREAM CAN is L3000. I want bass that i can feel. I love my ESW10jpn but the bass is clean and accurate and sometimes I feel a lil bump BUT I want like kickbass and stuff to be like POW batman style. Yet I want sparkly highs and mids like my Grados. From what I hear the Denons are a good mix of Grado and Senn.

So with this in mind is it best to get D7000 to get both aspects of D5000? Or are the reviews about the bass and such without markl mods?

Thanks for any help! It is GREATLY appreciated.

I would take senn out of the equation personally. I can't get down to JUST Denon or Just Grado. If I could Meld those tow at the best proportions, it would be a done deal.

How I rank them

#1 Can to have on Gilligan's Island?

1) Denon D5000(thats what I have)
2) GS1000 for a second Choice
3) Distant Third JVC DX1000

Evan since you are going to mod the headphone I suggest you buy a pair of used D2000 for about $200-$225. Then have the seller send them directly to MarkL.

Discuss w/ MarkL the type of music you like, the gear you have, and what you expect the sound to be. MarkL will help you select the better wood cups and mod the headphone. If money is tight have MarkL install the D5000 or D7000 cables.

Now if money is no object get the D7000 and have MarkL mod them and install a pair of wood cups w/ a Jenna re-cable.

But in all honesty the option w/ the D2000 will give you the biggest bang for the buck. Hopefully MarkL will chime in.

thanks guys, my main question is do the sound diff between the d2000, d5000, d7000 match what I said from what Ive read?

Meaning is the bass the best on D2000 after Marklmod?
If all three were modded side by side would there be differences?
Trying to decide which to mod, money isnt a big deal as I can get either one for close enough price. Thanks
