if i am happy with my er4s earphones but want to upgrade with a full sized headphone with similar sound sig but an overall improved presentation (better highs, more detail in the mids, tighter lows), would k701 be the choice? how similar are they and how dissimilar are they? are the sonical improvements significant? or should i be better off buying a better DAC or AMp?

Personally, I don' really think they sound that similar - but I do love my AKG K701s. A few days ago I did a mini review of my HD650, RS-1 and AKG K701, and didn't give the K701 enough respect. I listened to it al day today, and man - is it a good headphone. I think it is better in basicaly everyway than the ER4S is.

But unamped, the K701 probably isn't going to sound great. I'll bring my 1/4 to 1/8th adapter tomorrow and compare my K701s to my ER4S out of an iPod Nano 2nd Gen and give you my impressions.

Cheers,
Brad

now that i think about it, 701 does remind me of er4s, in a way.

simply, you can expect better soundstage, fuller bass/midrange, and so on, from 701.

In my experience, I agree with what he said, and also highs extend further.

OK, talk about synchronicity, yesterday I plugged the Ety 4s into my Meir cantate right after listening to my K701 because my kid had the tv loud and I wanted isolation.

I was reading this thread as I was listening to the K701 and just switched to the 4s to re affirm my impresions from yesterday.

My 701's just have 400hrs so are broken in.

They do have more bass, airiness, and headstage than the Etys but are , for me , from the same sonic lineage.
If you like the etys I think you will like the K701 a lot. It makes sonic sense, to my ears, to go from the Etys to the K701.

I love my Etys but a full size can brings a more speaker like presentation that is different in a good way.

I travel with my etys, on the plane, Yuin PK1 in the hotel and K701 at home unless I need isolation at home.

I suspect you would be very happy with the K701 if you like the Etys.

Remember that that the K701 needs a lot of break in . Out of the box they sound horrible! But even after 10 hrs the difference is significant and at 400hrs they sing a very seductive song.

The closest thing to ER4 in full size I have tried is the Koss A250 but that is not easy to find. It has bigger and fuller base, sounds more musical but antonyfirst who I bought it from found it to display some sibilance unamp and with a cheapish amp. With my EarMax and SuperMicro and also with my former Xin Reference that was not a problem. Build quality is not very good but they are very comfortable and they are BIG, bigger than both my L3000 and K340.
