I'm about to treat myself to a pair of AKG K701 'phones and have found some good prices on Ebay (+/- $250 & $30 shipping) but am a little wary of all the talk of fake 'phones on Ebay.

Does anyone have any tips to avoid getting stiffed or have any dealer recommendations who can do the same sort of price and can ship to Canada?

I've never heard of a fake K701.

There are websites in china that will sell you an absurd & bizarre headphone that they claim is a K801, but you would have to be blind AND drunk to buy it by mistake.

Neither have I...
If you want to be sure, why don't you buy a used K701 from a Headfi-member with good reputation? In return, the K701 will already sound smooth as it has already played for a few hours. Out of the box, IMHO the K701 lacks bass quantity and quality.

There are quite a few k701s for sale by Head-fi members right now, and the prices seem to be very reasonable. If I were in the market right now, I would buy from one of our own!!

there are many fake earbud and canal phone type of cans on ebay but it's pretty rare to see something like the k701 being copied. i'd bet that the profit margin to copy and build a k701 knock off is much less than something like a cx300 or ec7 where the construction is relatively simple. if you look for a tear down/disassembly of a k701, you'll notice how complicated its construction is.

Thanks for the help and clarification fellahs.
In the end, I took your advice and bought a used pair of K701s from a fellow Head-Fier.
Can't wait for them to show up.
I also bought an RSA Hornet M from another Head-Fier.
Happy Xmas to me!

Nice move! : ) I'm recently doing some a/b-ing between the RAL/K701 and the Headphile(BlackMax)/HD600. I already strongly prefer the HD600 to the HD650, and am coming now--at least preliminarily--to prefer the K701 to the HD600. The HD600 compliment well the K701, but there's a freshness, immediacy and balance to the latter that definitely "trips my headphile switch"! : )
