I haven't yet done a careful controlled test of this. Unofficially, though, they didn't make my list of cans I enjoy without an amp.

(That list is short and in the portable headphone category it is pretty much limited to the HD25-1 and the RP-HTX7. I don't even like the KSC35 or PX100 unamped any more. So it certainly could be argued that my tastes are not representative of the general Head-Fi population.)

Amped at work with my Gilmore Lite the ES7 has the clean, clear sound described by Asr and others above. Unamped (from a Shuffle and a Nano) I felt a lot of that clarity was lost, to the point where I clipped my Shuffle back onto my RP-HTX7 where it normally sits, and wore that while doing some things around the house last weekend instead of the ES7 that I'd been looking forward to using this way.

. . .

HOLY CRAP! Today I am now kicking myself in the nuts!

Thats disturbing. And wrong.

But as a side note: damn, are you double-jointed or something?

I tend to agree that ES7 does sound better when hooked up to my Headfive but they are still very good connected directly to my Creative player. Within my system, they are much better than my previous best choice HD25-1 for this application. These two cans are very different though, when I listen to HD25-1 and switch to ES7 I feel like a veil has been lifted. Switching from ES7 to HD25-1 just makes the HD25-1 seem boring and lifeless (and I really like HD25-1). Having said that, I do appreciate the tonal qualities of HD25-1 but ES7 is very close and IMO so much more fun.

Just build a headbanger for $20.00 and run it on 2 9v batteries. Another option is to have a techie from head-fi build it. It is completely portable and will sound great with the ES7. Just watch your volume, without a limiter it puts out in excess of 120db!

But given your list doesn't include the K 181DJ and HD25-1, I'm not so sure your journey is over my friend...

x2. Steve, there are always more toys to try.

speaking of which, has anyone tried the relatively new akg canal phones, the k324ps?

Nice write-up, as usual. The ES7 is a rockin' portable headphone and it looks good enough to wear in public.
Welcome to Team ES7, indeed! Davederek should be chiming in shortly

. I know he's pretty happy with it. I sold mine to him because the ES7 was just a little to small for my noggin'.
I've kinda given up on a portable cans search and am resorting to IEMs for now. I do hope to buy the HD25-1 if one comes up for sale here. I tried it briefly at a local shop and liked it a lot.

whoops, sorry for being late to the party. i just saw this thread. yeah, gotta thank you again for turning me on to these pretty phones, Young! these cans are certainly a fun listen. as with every other AT can i've heard tonal accuracy isn't their strong suit, something that's usually fairly important to me, but these are quite engaging to listen to. one thing no one's yet commented on is the ridiculously short cord. make sure you can keep your source or amp very close at hand or you will be tugging on things.
Young, wrt iems are the westone 3s on your list, or given your proclivity for AT products have you considered the ck9s?

i wasn't a real big fan of these though for some music such as female vocals they cast a spot light that could be rather enjoyable. they also have a nice look and solid feel to them. i'm about to get some ck-9s which i'm hoping have a fuller, more satisfying sound to them and will report back at some point. there's not a lot out there on head-fi about them.

The Ax00 series has a small midrange dip. The ES7 has no such impediment.

I'm not kidding when I say that burn-in improves the ES7 tremendously. Just one hundred hours of pink noise and the separation is about on par to the ER4 (you can hear pretty much everything independently) and every note (as from a guitar) is clear and succinct. Surprisingly, bass quantity has decreased very little (for me) but it's cleaned up quite a bit. The highs and mids get a lot sweeter and more revealing as well. There's more air between notes.

At the same time, I can't help but feel that the soundstage is getting a tiny bit tighter. I actually like this (it's one of the reasons I like IEMs), but I can see this going against someone who likes to game or listen for width. Placement is still really good, though.

IMHO first impressions mean little for this headphone.

Cool initial post, so I guess I'm giving it a bump as I just got some ES7s. I'd heard ES7s previously, and in demoing them I found them (as advertised) a small step down from my HD25-1s.

Although I still feel the same way and my position hasn't changed--I listen to so much music at work it became worth the $95 I had to spend to pick up some ES7s used just to have ES7s around as a change of pace. They got attention from the coworkers if nothing else--certainly can't say that about the HD25-1s.

HD25-1 still rules the roost though--even at the borderline absurd pricepoint they're sold at. With the velour pads better they have superior comfort to the ES7, slightly better sound (IMO), and there's no comparison as far as durability goes. ES7s are nice though!

Wish there were more options in portable closed. As cool as my headphones at home are I probably listen to 80-90% of my music at work on portable closed headphones. IEMs can have better SQ but they're such a pain to take in and out. And oftentimes my home listening is merely a staging area for what I'm going to put on the Ipod for work use. Would love to see a manufacturer create a truly elite closed headphone that happened to be portable. Alas...
