I've just bought myself a pair of Meelectronics HT-21 cans, and although they sound great from a 6G 120GB iPod Classic; i've wanted to buy aportble amp for a while and do not have a clue where to start. Any ideas would be muchly appreciated.

Hope you don't mind I "intrude" a little bit on your topic ;) I've got the same question (except I've got a Clip+ and a pair of Denon's AH-C551).

For me (and possibly for you), I've been thinking about buying a Fiio E7. It's got just what I need (a good amp and a good USB DAC) and it's very cheap (~75€/~100$).

Every single one of these thread I recommend the E7. It's an excellent amp for the price, has a Bass Boost (if you want it), and can be combined with the E9 later on for a pretty great budget desktop set-up as well. Go for it.

E7 or T3 (for IEMs, I can personally recommend the T3).

Yes, but the iBasso is more expensive than the E7 and doesn't have a DAC.

In terms of sound quality, is the T3 really worth it against the E7?

Apparently you've decided that it isnt - go with the E7. It also has the advantage of being the default partner for the E9 if you decide you want a desktop amp later.

Well, we kinda went on a tangent then.
I've been looking around a tid bit, and have seen these types.

A
ny critisism?

Shouldn't really buy a CMoy. Make one yourself for a fraction of the price and see how you like it, it's a fun exercise. TBH, there will only be a slight difference in SQ with it, only because you would be using a LOD with it.

Why build one when these guys claim their CMOYs will rock your world ?

Sixty bucks plus postage. You'd struggle to find that in the FS section, even if the CMOY lacks the punch of amps like my P4.

If you feel you want to build a cMoy yourself, go right ahead, it sounds like a fun project!  I've been thinking of making one myself.  Anyway, all the info you need to build a really nice one is right here:

http://www.jdslabs.com/diy.php

This guy sells them too, he also sells all the parts you need to make one yourself.  Looks like with all the materials you need plus shipping it would cost about ~$50.  But this is for a really high-end cMoy, though it still sounds like a fun weekend (or month-long, depending on how good you are at this stuff. :P) project.

If you want a no thrills walkthrough go here:

Something more indepth:

Parts are readily available from maplins/rs/farnell/radioshack etc. Dont get too bogged down in buying "quality" parts, I've made serveral from maplins el-cheapo componants to better low esr, high capacity caps, etc and TBH, I didn't think there was any difference at all. Maybe I need higher end headphones to hear the difference, but meh, I wouldnt be using a CMoy if I had expensive headphones

"I wouldnt be using a CMoy if I had expensive headphones "

Dude, I fry chicken for headphones..

Well, I exaggerate abit  It does what it's meant to do, just better stuff out there. A CMoy would probably be the weakest link in the chain if you go real high end and it just wont make sense to use one anymore.

Depending on where you live, there are different e-tailers and and brick and mortar retailers. Where I live, UK - Maplins, Farnell, RS.

RS online and Farnell should be international.
