I am new to this. I got a pair of Hifiman HE 400 and an Matrix M Stage amp with a Fiio 11. I use both amps at once and they sound amazing. Hp-$400 Amp-$225 and fiio 11-$60. MY EARS ARE HAVING GOODTIME. With a Nexus 7 supplying the music- $250

I had the HE 400 with an E17, it was great,  I A/B it with Lyr/Bifrost  and E17 and didn't noticed much of a difference.

Then I auditioned the HE 500 with the E17 then Lyr/Bifrost, to make a long story short, I now own a HE 500 but I do miss that amazing sub bass the HE 400 has. I mostly likely purchase the HE 400 again, they are that good, or get a pair of LCD2.

My favourite headphones are the HD800. They will power a cd player or a laptop to decent enough levels. They don't go hugely loud with an ipod or a phone so would need an amp for those in my opinion. But if you want good headphones buy good headphones first and foremost not all the rest of the stuff. You might not need it as a starting point the money should go mostly on the headphones.

A $1000 would be low for high end. It would only get him mid fi. Based on what he said, I gave an estimate that was not in the clouds or too low to be considered entry level. Both the k701 and the hd600/650 like better quality amps and they both scale to better source/amp. While he doesnt need to spend a $1000, $250 for can, $350 for dac and $350 for an amp isnt unreasonable or unheard of on headfi.

I wouldn't spend $700 on source gear and only $250 on headphones... in my experience you would get more out of it by getting better headphones. Although I'm sure they do scale well and things might be different once you hit that price point. But you could always get something more expensive! It never ends, does it?

Just by reading the original post I got the idea that track28 was looking for something "mid-fi".

A low end will probably cost you around/under $150 (i.e Sansa Clip+ $55 + Grado SR60i $79), as for mid-fi will probably cost you around/under $1500 (i.e Dacmini $795 + HE-500 $699).. CMIIW

Wow - mid-fi has really changed huh ........ I always thought it was on performance rather than price ......

OP - if you're on a budget, but want to step-up, my recommendation would either be a Beyer DT880 or an HD600 (Beyer should be around USD 200 on the FS forums here / HD600 can usually be had around the USD 250 mark - again FS forums here).  For the DAC/Amp combo - again budget buy - I'd suggest something like the Audio-gd NFB-15.32 (http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/Headphoneamp/NFB15.32/NFB15.32EN.htm).  Others will likely suggest Magni/Modi combo (Schitt).  I haven't heard that one - but the reviews are good.

Both options (above) get you a good mid-fi start at under USD 500.00.  The nice thing about the A-gd is that you can add a tube amp afterward if you want (using the dac section of the A-gd).  Then you get best of both worlds.

You don't need to spend a fortune to get good sound IMO.

I haven't heard the Mad Dogs or Modi, but you may consider the MDs, and Modi/Magni stack. It'll cost about $400 plus shipping.

Of course it's all about performance, the HE-500 is among the best mid-fi headphones alongside with HD600/650 and other mid-fi headphones

That'd be $500 wouldn't it $300 MD + $200 M&M stack + shipping?  It's actually a credit to Mr Speakers MDs - you hardly ever see them on the FS section here.

You can get a new pair of HD600's for $310 from Accessoryjack.com, I just ordered a pair yesterday and I've used them before for other stuff.  That's the cheapest I've seen them anywhere except maybe ebay sometimes but its around the same price.

The point being ofcourse that the HE 500, as well as the HD600, the HE 400 etc etc are all products easily within hi fi territory and the silly term "mid fi" only refers to how much money you're spending.

Man if the HE-500 is mid-fi I've got a ways to go before I ever get to hi-fi.
