How much money do I need to spend for high-end headphones?

What is considered a high-end headphone?

Which headphones are high-end?

I was looking at the HD600, Which I can get on Amazon.CA for $400...are those considered high-end?

If those are, then purchasing high-end headphones must be WAY cheaper than getting some great speakers.

I don't have a separate DAC right now, I am just using my onboard sound with my PA2V2 amp which I love, I plan on getting the Topping D30 for a DAC in the future.

I have 3 pairs of headphones:

-Sennheiser HD-25
-Grado MS1
-Koss KSC75

There is no hard and fast rule for to get high end headphone. The definition of high end is dependent on the user. I am happy with my Campfire Audio Nova with my LG G6. They are not the top of the line but I enjoy it. To me once you get the desired outcome, it is considered as high end :) expensive does not mean high end :)

Depends on when you ask that.

Ask it in 2002 and the HD600 are high end enough since they're the most expensive with the HE60 and HE90/Orpheus system out of production.

Ask that in 2010 and there's the HD650 (and HD660S) and HD800, and now, a replacement for the Orpheus. Plus the HD600 has dropped in price and Massdrop has the HD6XX ($200) and HD58X ($150).

If those are, then purchasing high-end headphones must be WAY cheaper than getting some great speakers.

Just note you won't get a completely out of your head soundstage on these, although with speakers the size of the imaged soundstage will still be limited by the size of the room as much as by the speakers themselves.

You can look into getting the AudioGD NFB-11 too.

My only comment to you is, try out the gear before you purchase (if you can).
Read reviews, and consult forums. (It helps a lot!)
There are many categories you want to look at, not simply price:
- Sound quality (to your taste and pairing with your type of music)
- Comfort (super important!)
- price; respect your budget!

Also, a pair of HD-600 for 400$ is on the expensive side
You need to shop around!,
But yes, HD-600 could be considered high end for many, especially considering dropping 400$ for headphones.
Take into consideration you are asking people (many of us) who have an obsession with this hobby, so spending that type of money for many in considered ''well invested'' but for others outside the hobby, it could be considered absurd.

Having heard some headphones here and there, I honestly think you don't reach "high end" until you shoot past $1K nowadays. Everything under that is great sound quality for the value, but above that, headphones really start blowing you away with their level of resolution, speed, dynamics, soundstage, etc. You would be amazed with what you can find, but it is very costly! You would need a quality desktop or portable set-up to get the most out of them.

Looks like you are new though, so I wouldn't suggest upgrading immediately. Stick with what you have currently and find out what makes them great, then upgrade your gear gradually. That way, you'll appreciate the sound quality improvements between each upgrade more. Plus, you won't go broke.

Thanks guys for the great comments, I was told by a member that I would need to buy a lot of different headphones because I upgrade my PA2V2 amp, apparently it's a great little beast.

I really do think I need a better DAC though, the onboard DAC is pretty terrible, good for games but not for music.

I will for sure be getting the Topping D30, I was reading about the Modi 2 as was told to stay away from it, The Topping D30 also has DSD and I do have some DSD files I'd like to try...

But as for the Topping A30...think I'll hook my PA2V2 to the D30 and go from there.
